FReeper names explained
My curiousity | Now | Yours truly

Posted on 01/18/2002 5:03:35 PM PST by Come get it

Some FReepers have nicks that are obvious in their origin, others don't. I've seen several that probably have interesting stories behind them.

I thought it would be cool to see where FReepers get their handles from. If you don't like this topic, DON'T POST HERE! No one forces you to read this. I'm sure other people may be interested. If I'm the only one, let me know so I can crawl away in shame.

"Dainbramage was taken so VoiceofBruck popped in your head?

Why not CungLancer or CerminalTancer ?"

He could've tried Tead Hrauma too

and you could've been even MORE Popular with "Mire Fan"

"It's a nickname I earned on the jobsite: C(rusty)O(ld)B(astard)."

LOL!!! I thought I once read it had something to do with toilet paper (the roll?) It was on the classic Arthur thread, so I may have been misreading!

Why did the Chief Negotiator pick his name? Do you know? I always thought it was a great screen name, and told him so. thanks! :)

I'll compromise myself and admit this: I didn't remember it from the play, I remembered a shipboard scene from the movie with Mel Gibson. But I do hereby swear by my leather-bound set of the complete works of Shakespeare that I did read the play once long ago. Every so often I get the urge to further my education and I pull the book off, blow the dust from the cover, and read something. Just recently I read Merchant of Venice just for the pure heck of it. Man, Europeans are anti-semitic! But I am pleased to report that I guessed which casket Portia's portrait was in immediately.

In my case it is amusing since I used to have guys all the time trying to pick me up and I happen to be an old guy with a beard.

You aren't retired Navy are you? I know a grizzled old Holly...

I am in college. Further, I am (more or less) a Republican. Hence my FReeper name.

My screen name, MERCAT, is a combination of several things. I first got on the net the same year that The Lion King came out and meercats were popular. My husband still buys me meercats. I was also reading Mere Christianity by C.S.Lewis and since I'm a Catholic I thought this was a good short version of Mere Catholicism... finally, my son had just been given a new stratocaster for Christmas (an electric guitar for those of you in Rio Linda) and his screen name was Stratocat so mine had to end in cat and my initials are MER.

I was introduced as the next mayor of Grand Island at a Polish cadets club dinner that was held in honor of one of my friends. The title has stuck with me for a few years due to the fact that i irritate all the local, county and state politicans, i question everything they do and haven't missed but a hand full of town board meetings in 61/2 years.

waterslugg770 is a poly-name if you will...here is the breakdown of it's components..... A)waterslugg....the navy term/name for a torpedo tube full of water fired by a submarine during wargames, maintainence on the tubes, etc, etc...... B)770....the hull number of the last submarine i was stationed on, the USS Tucson, SSN770...a 688I class...one of the last 688's and the best of the bunch. i'm a plankowner too. great boat, great memories..... also the nickname given to my first tattoo, waterslugg anyway...it's a tat of a water-borne dragon...seemed like an appropriate nickname.

One of the folks I used to go to church with was a plankowner on Hornet. He was onboard when Doolittle launched, and when she went down. He had some awesome sea stories to tell.

No never in the military although I did a lot of contractor work. There was a Holly who was in the military or was some form of spook. I don't know anything about him however. JimRob did but good luck getting anything out of him.
