A right-left split is straining the Republican big tent as the party's national committee prepares to meet in Texas this week.

Committee sources said that party officials have been maneuvering to keep ideological tensions from erupting into a public dispute in Austin.

You are a rational, reasoned voice on this thread. Therefore, plan to be ignored. :-)

Why I continue to stay with a political party that every 2 years finds a new and exciting way to help itself.."Self-Destruct" and lose elections is beyond me! The only thing I can think of is that the alternatives are worse!

Because YOU are the party. We need the entire spectrum of Republicans including many Independents in order to gain a 50% majority to defeat the leftists. PLEASE don't go anywhere. Our country NEEDS you!!!! Now thanks, for reconsidering.

The time for being "rational and reasonable" is long past. There is no being reasonable with people who will rip a baby literally limb from limb. That's the big mistake of the last 30 years.

The House has been extremely successful in passing the President's agenda. It is TOM DASCHLE and HILLARY CLINTON that are bottling everything up. Again, our goal must be to take back the Senate. That is the answer. If we do this, watch what happens.

The Republicans had a majority in both houses and the presidency and they didn't even broach the topic of abortion. Face it, once a Republican majority in the Senate gets cobbled together, the "leadership" will not pass any meaningful legislation for fear of offending the North Eastern RINO wing.

Inaction on the abortion issue is the functional equivalent of supporting abortion.

We had the Senate. We did nothing with it.

But you still haven't answered my question: why is it that the Democrats can prevail without controlling ANY of these bodies, while the Republicans seem to need bullet-proof supermajorities in all three places to accomplish anything?

When Roe v. Wade was decided, there were 5 Republicans and 4 Democrats on the bench.

This isn't 1973, it's 2002. Oh BTW, how many of those Justices that Republicans appointed had to be confirmed by a Democratic Senate?

Yet another hint from Bush that he is trying to pull the GOP to the left to make it more presentable to the country clubbers and soccer moms. Those who actually voted for Bush can take a hike.

I don't know. Tell me. How many that Bush appoints will have to be approved by a Democratic Senate?

We had the Senate. We did nothing with it.

A 50-50 senate. Of course no one expected Jumpin Jim Jeffords betrayal, giving Daschle control of the Senate.

But you go ahead beat your chest and keep repeating to yourself what a political marvel(armchair quarterback) you are.

The RATS DO control the Senate - ever since Jeffords left. Cheney no longer has the deciding vote. And it was pretty early on that Jeffords left the party. President Bush has come through each time he was being accused of selling out his pro-life views, as Dog Gone stated. He has only been in office for one year. The problem with some of you is that you want everything to happen immediately. The main reason RATS win is because they are PATIENT with their agenda. Their people do not abandon their President or their leaders. THAT is how they get their legislation through. They all stick together even if they don't agree with every single thing that is happening. Wise up, trust our President and you will see that he will keep his promises.

Looks like you want to keep it that way.

The first article say that he only supports "left of center candidates." The second says that he raised a lot of cash for Bush. Which is correct?

Abortion is going to remain legal in this country for at least awhile longer, and it doesn't matter what you or I or George W Bush think about that. We have no power to change it.

And in fact, even after Roe is overturned, abortion will still be legal in a very large number of states.

I'm pro-life, but I'd like to see us devote more resources to preventing abortion rather than trying to outlaw it, because I don't think outlawing it is actually going to reduce the numbers very much at all.

The pubbies HAD the senate.

They also HAD the opportunity to rid our nation of Bill Clinton.

The pubbies chose to ignore their oaths and do nothing.

For this they ask for our continued support?

Actually, I'd rather not have a Democratic Senate, although my reasons have more to do with gun rights than abortion issues. I formatted my previous reply poorly. I really don't know how many of the Roe v. Wade justices had to be passed through a Democratic Senate, and I am curious. Yes, I can look it up, but if you have it handy, I'd appreciate it.

Wrong.

Read your constitution. It takes 2/3rds of the Senate to convict for impeachment. There was no way they were going to get 12 rat votes.
