A right-left split is straining the Republican big tent as the party's national committee prepares to meet in Texas this week.

Committee sources said that party officials have been maneuvering to keep ideological tensions from erupting into a public dispute in Austin.

FaxNotes – January 17, 2002

SPECIAL ALERT – OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE

The Republican National Committee, at the urging of President Bush and his political advisers, is on the threshold of a decision that could only be interpreted by pro-life Americans as insulting and contemptuous of all that we, and our Party’s platform stand for.

A Washington Times column by Ralph Hallow on Tuesday, January 16, reported that President Bush wants the Committee, meeting this weekend in Austin, Texas, to install Lewis Eisenberg as RNC Finance Chairman.

Eisenberg is a liberal, pro-abortion activist millionaire investment banker who raised millions of dollars for George W. Bush’s presidential campaign. He is a close associate of former Governor of New Jersey, Christine Todd Whitman, who is currently chairman of the Environmental Protection Agency in the Bush administration and whose pro-abortion views are well known. Eisenberg, together with Whitman, organized the Republican Leadership Council and the Committee for Responsible Government, to raise large sums of money for pro-abortion candidates in Republican primaries. They are committed to removing the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform.

Lew Eisenberg appears to be even-handed in his support of pro-abortion politicians. While he has supported Republicans in the recent past, he has also contributed to liberal Democrats Walter Mondale, Dick Gephardt, Tim Wirth, Chris Dodd, Bruce Babbitt and Joe Biden, among others.

In the early 90’s Lew Eisenberg lost his job at Goldman Sachs due to a sexual harassment lawsuit brought against him by a young woman named Kathy Abraham with whom he had a 7-year affair. Eisenberg is married with 3 children. Ms. Abraham accused Eisenberg of making sexual demands of her in order to keep her job. “Eisenberg even suggested that she have sex with other Goldman Sachs partners,” according to The Times.

Now, on the eve of the 29th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, as pro-life Americans sadly commemorate the 48 million or more babies who have been killed through abortion, will the Republican Party deliver to us the incredible insult of installing this man in a high Party position?

One wonders what the Bush leadership can be thinking. After all, if they want a great fund raiser who is a pro-abortion liberal with a sleazy reputation concerning women, Bill Clinton is available! Surely there are numerous Republicans who are capable of raising money for the Party.

According to the Times story, Ralph Reed, former executive director of Christian Coalition and now a professional political consultant and chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, plans to nominate Eisenberg for for the position, “a move intended to make his election more acceptable to the right.” To the contrary, a move like this will only serve to alienate more pro-life conservatives from the Party and swell the ranks of those who did not vote in the 2000 election.

We have learned that many members of the Republican National Committee were not aware that they would be asked to vote for Lew Eisenberg this weekend. Indeed, many have never heard of him and know nothing about him. Those who have learned of this scheme deeply resent the tactics being used. People are supposed to run for Party positions and be duly elected. Not anointed from above and rubber-stamped.

YOU can do something about this!

Everyone who receives this briefing is represented on the Republican National Committee by three people; your National Committeewoman, National Committeeman, and State Party Chairman.

Most of them will be in Austin, Texas at the RNC mid-winter meeting. They are staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The phone number is: 512/477-1234.

A list of RNC members is printed below. Please call the Hyatt Regency and leave the following message for your three representatives:

“Please oppose efforts to make Lew Eisenberg Finance Chairman of the RNC. Please elect someone to the position who supports the ideals and principles of the Party, whose values reflect those of Republicans in general, and whose personal reputation is not an embarrassment.

If they want more information, offer to fax them this report or refer them to the January 16th Washington Times article by Ralph Hallow.

This is a matter of extreme urgency. Please act now. Thank you!!

I wanted to update everyone on two things pertaining to Lew Eisenberg----

1--I have it under good authority that Ralph Reed will not be nominating Eisenberg.

2--In a Nov 15, 1999 Rollcall article about Eisenberg it was reported that he had voted in just two of 11 GOP primaries between 1987 and 1997. This is also an important fact when making calls.

3--The RNC claims that Ms. Abraham recanted her story. This is untrue. There was a settlement of a court case which involved neither party discussing the terms of the settlement. Both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have recapped this incident in coverage since and there has been no attempt to correct them.

You would rather pro-death Republicans be appointed to the Supreme Court?

He's in no position to influence infanticide policy. Who cares?

What an insult, on the eve of the March For Life. The GOP is self destructing.

Republican National Coalition for Life

It should not even be necessary to need to help Republican National Coalition for Life gather thousands of signed pledges in support of the pro-life plank in the 2004 Republican National Platform.

But these are the times we live in. The GOP might well remove the Pro-Life Plank in the near future. We all better start thinking about our next move if it does.

I would rather Republicans follow their party platform, including the pro-life plank, or get out.

If the GOP is going to continue gutting its pro-life stance, I would rather they pull the pro-life plank and stop the charade that it means anything at all to the national GOP leadership.

Then I could in good conscience, join a third party that is pro-life in more than name only.

Is he in a position to influence which candidates get the financial support in elections? That will, in the end, influence policy.

Seems like a yawn to me. While it's good to know where people stand on this important issue, there's only one person who can do anything about it, and that's when he nominates someone to the Supreme Court.

The question I would be interested in is whether Eisenberg can raise a bunch of money. That would be his job, right?

He who controls money controls policy.

From the other thread:

Eisenberg is the former chairman of the Republican Leadership Council, a group Bauer describes as being "dedicated to electing pro-abortion Republicans to office."

According to Bauer, in dozens of primaries around the country, Eisenberg poured money into the campaigns of pro-abortion and pro-homosexual-rights Republicans. The pro-family advocate also notes that Eisenberg and the RLC have routinely attempted to link pro-family, pro-life conservatives with "extremism and intolerance."

He cautions that Eisenberg will also be responsible for recruiting big donors to the Party -- and says it is safe to say that Eisenberg's friends, whom Bauer describes as "liberal, northeastern socialites," will not share conservative Republican values.

A 1990 Wall Street Journal article said "no one denies" that Mr. Eisenberg, who was married at the time, had a seven-year affair with Kathy Abraham. In her lawsuit, she claimed that Mr. Eisenberg suggested she have sex with other Goldman Sachs partners. The suit was later dismissed and Miss Abraham recanted her claims after receiving a settlement from the firm. Some conservatives expressed shock that Mr. Eisenberg is supported by Mr. Bush who, in his inaugural address, spoke of his commitment to "character" and "personal responsibility." Texas RNC member Denise McNamara said she was "deeply disappointed in the choice of Mr. Eisenberg."

"It says our party's standards are no different from the standards of the Democrats," she said.

Mr. Lambert said the sex scandal was his "major concern" with Mr. Eisenberg.

"This is exactly the kind of behavior that typified Bill Clinton," the Texas conservative said.

This should be as troubling if not more troubling than anything else about this man.

I would rather Republicans follow their party platform, including the pro-life plank, or get out.

In that case, if every Republican must follow every plank in the platform to the letter; then you as a Republican will have no trouble articulating every plank in the platform, because you believe in each and every one, without exception.

You have 20 minutes.

The GOP is self destructing.

No, it's finally being true to itself.

Instead of giving Dems and the Supremes all the credit with the Roe march, pro-lifers OUGHT to gather on the anniversary of Kissinger's 1974 NSSM-200 wherein abortion was officially recognized as "vital" to the solution of US population control strategy at home and abroad.

I still find it funny and sad so many are surprised by moves like these.

I don't see anyone apologizing for berating me time and again that I was wrong and Bush was a staunch "pro-lifer". Suckers.

True...my sentiments exactly. Throw the leftist Pubs a bone just to keep them quiet while he appoints pro-lifers to prominent positions that affect the issue. Makes sense to me.

The traitorous NJ republican machine facilitated the election of a sweaty little democrat rather than see a conservative republican outsider take the governorship. For this, I - and every other conservative NJ republican - will cast a jaundiced eye toward any Bush courting of NJ republican RINO hacks.

And I've said as much to the RNC when they hit me up for donations TWICE since November. Screw them all.

Some conservatives are unhappy with the expected election of prominent New Jersey fund-raiser Lewis Eisenberg as the party's new national finance chairman.

Now one has ever won the presidency or taken control of the senate and house with all conservatives. Just for the record it has never been done with all liberals too.

The key to winning has been held by Democrats for nearly 70 years. Traditionally the Democrats take Conservative Democrats and put them where they can do no harm to the liberal agenda, yet enable the liberal ajenda to win. For Democrats that is usually defense. Go back to the rise of the left and see where FDR put all those conservative southern Democrats. He put them in Defense. Democrats never let the Conservative Democrats near anything that had to do with social issues. But they sure let them build defense bases in the solid democratic south. The conservative Democrats in the house and senate were all placed on defense type comittees and then let the pork flow. It was called bribery in exchange for support for socialist economic policy.

On the national level Conservative Democrats were put on defense advisory committees. They never got near the courts or health or human services or setting social policy for the Democratic party.

Republicans demand that all left leaning Republicans get the hell out of the party. The right in no way wants any help that might get them elected. Hell NO. They tell anyone who is not a right wing purist to get the hell over and work their butts off to elect Clintons like GOD intended them to do.

So Dubya tries to do something that might get the right in control of the goverment. That is use a leftist Democrat to do something leftist Democrats do well. That is, raise lots of money.

The right says just imagine the damage a leftist could do if he raised millions and millions of dollare for Right Wing candidates. They say tell him to get the hell out of the Republician party go raise money for Hillaries Presidential Campaign like GOD intended liberals do do.

Does anyone every wonder if the right wing pays retail for their stupid pills or do they pay twice retail just to spite the drug store.
