LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 The comedian Avery Schreiber, who with his partner Jack Burns was a fixture on television in the 1960's and 70's, died here Monday.
He was 66 and died of a heart attack, said his wife, Rochelle Isaacs Schreiber.
The team of Burns and Schreiber appeared often on several television shows, including "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "Hollywood Palace." They also had a summer comedy- variety series, "The Burns and Schreiber Show," on ABC in 1973.
Among Burns and Schreiber's works was the album "The Watergate Comedy Hour."
After the two went their separate ways, Mr. Schreiber became a popular fixture in Doritos commercials, appearing as a chef, sultan, judge, pilot or other character who would be distracted by people crunching on the chips.
His forte, his wife said, was skewering politicians in his standup routine.
Schreiber also appeared on stage in such plays as "Hamlet," "Showboat," "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Ovid's Metamorphoses."
His last stage appearance was on Broadway in "Welcome to the Club," a 1989 Cy Coleman musical about divorced men who refuse to pay alimony.

That's a shame. I saw Schreiber and his wife at the local Gelsons grocery store in the San Fernando Valley not long ago. Now I regret not saying something to him when I had a chance.

Nice guy. I met him a few years back when he was appearing in an LA revival of the Gershwin musical "Strike Up the Band." He arranged for some comp tickets for me.

I am surprised that he was only 66. I thought he would have been much older than that by now.

He was also the villain on My Mother the Car.

He was also the villain on My Mother the Car. Yup. He was the bad guy to Jerry Van Dyke's good guy.
His mother (the car) was the famed 1928 Porter, voiced by Ann Sheridan.
