Continental Flight Diverted to El Paso Due to Unruly Passengers

The Associated Press

Published: Dec 25, 2001

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A Continental Airlines flight from Houston to Los Angeles was diverted to El Paso on Tuesday because of two unruly passengers, officials said. Flight 627 left Houston at 11:50 a.m. and landed in El Paso at 1:43 p.m., said Roland Herwig of the Federal Aviation Administration.

"There were actually two unruly passengers on board the aircraft and as a precautionary measure the plane was diverted to El Paso," Continental spokeswoman Julie King said.

King said the 757 resumed its flight to Los Angeles shortly after it landed.

She said she had no further details, and there were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Officials the El Paso International Airport, including the airport police department, did not return telephone calls placed by The Associated Press. AP-ES-12-25-01 1553EST

Can someone tell me why we don't have handcuffs on the airplanes? Just cuff the "unruly" passenger to his seat and go on to your destination.

We do. All planes now have those think plastic insta-cuff things ... you know, like oversized cable ties. The flight attendents can tie up anyone they want with them.

And what happened to the sky marshalls?

There aren't enough of them yet. The only way to guarantee you're going to be on a flight with a sky marshall is to get on a plane going either to or from Reagan National. They have 100% coverage.

FBI investigators were called to the airport to question the unruly passengers.

They were given a STERN TALKING-TO, and the flight resumed!

For the purposes of enlightening me, please define "unruly" in the eyes of the airline?

Maybe they were trying to light their shoes.

They probably either had to go to the bathroom, or forgot to put their traytables up.

Nobody is going to sue these "unruly passengers" for whatever turmoil they have caused, but what do you bet the unruly passengers sue Continental for some sort of hate crime or civil rights offense?

Ooooh. Now there's a nice, fat lawsuit waiting to happen.

How about if we let the marketplace decide the smoking issue? We could have smoking airlines, non-smoking airlines and mixed. We might all have to pay more as it would be harder to fill up the planes.

I think the airlines used to recycle the cabin air more frequently when smoking was allowed, so it's not clear that the ban actually helped air quality.

The non smokers thought they could improve on a system like that.

It's not just the lack of a smoking section. The sad reality is that as flying has gone from being a luxury to a commodity, the ... um, shall we say, socio-economic levels have been mixing on planes more and more. The next time you fly, take a look at how many people look like they literally rolled out of bed and right up to the gate. Dirty, stained T-shirts, shorts, probably with several improperly-cared-for-and-thus screeching infants that will be yelled at by their parents, etc etc. It all adds up.

Combine that with the intentional decline in service values by the airlines themselves, and it's a wonder they didn't all go bankrupt five years ago.

Two hours to fly less than 600 NM? Maybe they were unruly because the flight was making lousy time.

It's over 800 miles from Houston to El Paso.About the same distance from Houston to Chicago.

The sun has riz, the sun has set and here I is in Texas yet.

Since I live five minutes from the airport, it's so comforting to know El Paso is a dumping ground for unruly passengers aside from being a dumping ground for the state's sexual offenders. El Paso...everyone's dream....everyone's nightmare.

Just heard a little while ago on TV that a flight attendant tossed a bag of peanuts at a lady passenger. She thought that was rude, so she tossed a drink back in his face.

Sounds like a Mack Sennett movie!

That's what you get with your regular classless communist society like ours. In the olden days the riff raff traveled by bus if it traveled at all, while those of us who can read and write boarded Pullmans and aeroplanes. And on passenger trains, there were well separated classes of seats. You'd know that a couple of unruly upper class boys wouldn't try to bring an airplane down, but with unruly semi conscious vulgarians you never know for certain. You can have your egalitarianism. I say restore the class society.

(But seriously, recognize that there are social classes and recognize the vulgarization of America.)

Post-9/11, if it is reported to be two drunk college students, there will be at least a dozen people on this forum who claim it's a cover up.

LOL. I started reading this thread thinking I could get a few tin-foil laughs, but I see they haven't emerged yet.

I heard during a news report on this story that there were 37 flights diverted last Christmas due to "unruly passengers".

I say restore the class society.

Brave of you to say that. But, that isn't the problem. For example, look at the universities. More class can be seen in a small town. Plenty of money percentage wise in universities. Look at New York, a place loaded with money, where elephant dung on the Virgin Mary is trumpeted proudly by the New York museum as sophisticated art.

Look at the rich estates in the LA area where the famous actors live. Lots of money. And yet vulgar is their middle name.

It isn't money that makes class. It's morals. And morals deteriorate from lack of faith. Our religious leaders are the real problem. Some are too extreme, making it impossible to keep multi-generational followers. Others are too lax. Others are too boring. Others are too greedy. Others are downright demented. Others are too reactionary, fearing technology to the point that their followers fall behind in the technology curve, such as computers and internet access. And worst of all, most of them commit the Unforgivable Sin. They blaspheme the Holy Spirit, calling God's most recent miracles 'satanic deceptions'.

Yes, those were the days indeed. There was almost a party atmosphere in the smoking section. Flights over 3 hours haven't been the same since.

It's over 800 miles from Houston to El Paso. About the same distance from Houston to Chicago.

Checking my handy air distance calculator, I get 578 nautical miles from Houston to El Paso, and 797 NM from Houston to Chicago. That is approximately 660 and 920 statue miles, respectively.
