Passenger Describes Subduing Suspect

BOSTON (AP) -- Thierry Dugeon said the first he knew anything was wrong on American Airlines Flight 63 was when he heard a flight attendant 10 rows in front of him cry out, ``I need some help!'' `

`I was there in five seconds, and there were already two or three guys on him,'' Dugeon said Saturday after the Paris-to-Miami-bound jet landed safely at Boston. ``It was like everybody knew what they needed to do. It's pure instinct because it goes so fast. You're not going to think twice.''

Authorities said a man carrying a British passport in the name of Richard Reid may have been carrying explosives in the heel of his shoes and was trying to set fire to one of them when a flight attendant smelled sulfur and intervened.

Dugeon estimated that five to six male passengers subdued Reid -- who resisted at first -- using belts to bind his hands, waist, chest and feet. Two doctors injected him with a sedative from the onboard medical kit. `

`It's three months after Sept. 11. Of course, the first thing you think of is it's something to do with terrorism,'' he said.

Dugeon, a 36-year-old television reporter from Paris, said he was seated in Row 39, 10 rows behind Reid. He said he had noticed the man in the airport when boarding and there was nothing that made Reid stand out.

Dugeon said after the man was subdued, passengers searched him, found the British passport, and questioned him about whether he spoke French, English or Arabic.

Dugeon said Reid told the passengers was Jamaican, but they didn't believe him. A law enforcement source who asked not be identified said Reid was not Middle Eastern.

Over the next two hours, passengers took turns watching the sedated Reid while the crew showed the movie ``Legally Blonde.'' When the plane neared Boston, the captain told them that fighter jets would escort them to Logan. After landing, all the passengers stayed seated until the police came and took the suspect off.

Dugeon described Reid's footwear as hightop-type basketball sneakers, and said he had tried to light the front of his sneakers.

I am being the devil's advocate here: Does civil aviation allow the trial to be held at the point of departure or the destination or the country where the plane is flagged? The French would probably let the would be bomber go and throw the guys that beat the tar out him in a dungeon.

Seriously though, it truly is a wonder that the cretin really wasn't killed.

Yeah. Anyone who ever says again that Americans aren't restrained and civilized needs sharp slap across the face.

I know when a child is born in the air /enroute that the place of birth is listed where the plane "lands". I think with the lack of valid ID and his attempt to kill via an act of terrorism which may or may not be connected to the islamic Hamas/Al-Queda/Taliwhackers thugs then he'll be tried in the good ole USA IMHO.

What I think is at issue here is who checked this guys ID/Passport at the departure end ??? Look at him, he's the devil incarnate hisself, and yes I'm profiling here. If it keeps folks alive then I'm all for it.

Stay Safe !

Im an EE student don't take it up unless your real smart my IQ( according to various test) is somewhere in the 130-140 range and its still REALLY hard.

I'm sorry, I don't follow what you are getting at (what "it" is).

On my FR Home Page, I have a note that I'm not an electrical engineer (put it there because a lot of FReepers assume I am and ask about it or address me as one).

"They tied him up, strapped him to a seat, and made him watch "Legally Blonde"..."

I'd imagine Amnesty International is horrified.... but he did try to blow up a plane. They could have forced him to watch a Rosie O'Doughnut Special, you know. Seems they restrained themselves from inflicting the appropriate punishment.

"The whole paradigm has shifted 360 degrees."

Do you really mean things have gone 'full circle'? 360 degrees is the entire compass meaning starting from whence one began.

I don't know if a Zippo would set off C4.

No, but I bet it'd ignite the heck out of the detcord that they mentioned being in the shoes, which would then detonate the C4. Very scary situation. Kudos to the flight attendant and passengers.

Civil avaition allows the trial to be held in any or all of the nations you mentioned. Thus we have him and can try him on the basis of he did it on a flight that landed here. We can try him becqause he did it on an American flag airliner. After he has served his sentence here the French can try him on charges there. Since he has a British passport they can also have a crack at him. If he did a criminal act in Canaduan airspace they can also try him. The old piracy laws apply to air piracy.

Stay well - Stay sasfe - stay armed - Yorktown

Merry
Christmas

Hey Big Ern, I sure would ask to change my seat if this dirty slime ball was sitting next to me. And how on earth can he be so dangerous one day so as not to be allowed on the airplane - but by the next day he was "normal"? Haven't these airlines people in France ever heard of taking notes and passing along information? I'm sure the libs are all happy now that we have finally achieved "equality" and "diversity" - right?; now America also has active internatinal terrorists blowing up "targets" on our own soil. 3 cheers for equality /sarcasm.
BTW Merry Christmas, BE!
