We lose more than 40,000 people/year to auto accidents.

I believe the Federal Highway Administration rejects that figure as being an acceptable number of deaths and are working toward reducing that carnage.

How? I would guess since most drivers are not trained beyond their experience so the improvement would have to come in a manner that would be beyond the control of the individual driver.

Life saving technolog; ie, much like the airbag, the seat belt, these two ancient lifesavers, recent as they are, are not enough so we press on to other technologies that will force us to live a little longer or die by "an icicle falling on our head".
Or something less violent.(A modicum of jocularity there, See Reply #99)

No negative connotation to you was intended. I hope none was felt. I too wish to thank you for your service. It was because of examples like you that I volunteered. God bless you. BTW engines have been known to catastrophically fail on the B-1B and one was lost due to electrical problems. I believe we have lost six.
  1. Bird strike
  2. Fuel manifold failure
  3. Low level training accident
  4. Low level training accident
  5. Electrical fire/indications
  6. This one
