Bill Clinton could be making a return to public life as a chat show host.

The former president, currently touring Britain as a charity event speaker, is in talks with Michael Eisner, head of the Walt Disney corporation, about starting a series next spring.

'Bill is very keen to get back into the public arena and feels a TV show would be the ideal platform,' said a New York TV executive. 'Despite all the scandals while he was in the White House, he still remains very popular and he's extremely telegenic. Who is going to refuse an invitation from him to be on the show? He'll have the pick of the celebrity crop.'

If former US president Bill Clinton is looking for a tranquil spot to write his memoirs he could not do better than Kenmare in the beautiful south-west tip of Ireland.

With an advance reported to be in excess of £7.1 million in his pocket, Mr Clinton would have his pick of a number of lavish properties around the beautiful Ring of Kerry. The New York Post today reported that Clinton has already earmarked a £2.1 million holiday home described as ``the ultimate getaway``. Kenmare is a favoured holiday spot of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, while the daughter of former Taoiseach Charles Haughey lives in nearby Sneem and the current Irish President Mary McAleese has relations living locally. And the town was once listed as the 13th best place in the world to retire. Rumours of the former president`s interest have been gossip in the town for months, according to county councillor Michael Healy-Rae: ``There is a lot of speculation, particularly since he retired. ``It is rumoured a person has been delegated with the job of sussing out houses and sites coming on the market. ``If Mr Clinton did come it would be no surprise because of the type of people who are living in the area already. ``The reason they come here is that they know they are afforded 100% privacy. ``No-one bothers them and they are treated just the same as everybody else.`` Estate agent Kathleen Abbott, manager of Key Properties, said the most desirable properties - ranging in price from £1 million to £2 million - are those located on the coast. One currently available for £1.7 million is set in 33 acres with stunning views of the Kenmare River estuary. Mr Clinton is not the first president to show affection for the Emerald Isle. Mr Clinton himself claimed descent from the Cassidy family in Roslea, Co Fermanagh - perhaps mindful of the votes of the estimated 45 million Irish-Americans. But with an unprecedented three official visits to the Republic and Northern Ireland under his belt, Mr Clinton`s love affair with the country always seemed to run a little deeper. He began his most recent visit in June with a round of golf with his friend, the former Tanaiste Dick Spring at the prestigious Ballybunnion Golf Club, also in Co Kerry. Though he has yet to visit Kenmare that is unlikely to stop him investing in property there. Ms Abbott said: ``A few years ago film director Neil Jordan sent someone to buy a place in Castletownbere and they videotaped each property for him. ``These people wouldn`t just walk in off the street.``
