Survey finds 10 partners before marriage 'normal'

The majority of young people think it is normal for a person to have at least 10 sexual partners before marriage.

A survey has also found that three in 10 believe it is acceptable for a girl to lose her virginity before the age of 15.

Research carried out by Brook, the youth sex advisory service, says there is a "cultural change" in young people's attitudes towards sex.

Some 64% of men and 54% of women agreed that it was acceptable for a person to sleep with more than 10 partners before getting married.

But the survey, which questioned people aged 17 to 25, also showed that they wanted more information about sex and contraception.

Men admitted to getting most of their knowledge about contraception from TV and magazines, while women learned the most from magazines and their mothers.

Half of all the young women surveyed said they wished that teachers had supplied them with more information about preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Brook chief executive Jan Barlow said: "Young people have an increasing number of sexual partners and they are saying that's OK.

"But at the same time they don't have the information and access to services that they need.

"Young people must seek out advice and information in order to make their choices and to understand how to protect themselves both against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases."

"just concerned about those who might be missing the big O because they have no clue how to get it. ;-)"

Don't worry about that, Bella. There isn't a chance of that happening. And if some oddball occurrence does happen, I am sure they will have help.

[but what about all the other women out there who will follow your lead, expect their mates to be able to do the same] Yes.

Yes what? This is not an answer to my question.

I never said or implied any such thing, and that is what is wrong with your replies.

If you read my first post to Don Myers I stated that I'm not about to swim in dirty water either. Now what do you think that means? Try using a little less emotion, and a little more intellect when replying to someone who never even addressed a post to you to begin with.

My agreement with Dr. Frank is in that women get pregnant and men don't, and that such biological difference is not inconsequential, in terms of the disparity of suffering or burden that lies therein.

When I helped at a pro-life counselling center in the 1980's, a 15 year old girl from an affluent suburb said it was common for her age group to be facing pregnancy. The boy with her giggled the whole time. He wasn't the potential father, just a friend. I wish I could agree that the facts were about mutants. I don't think so. In the past the 8th graders I knew were quite innocent, especially the girls. Now that is not true at all, including the girls from church-going families.

I am also afraid that many parents endorse promiscuity at the earliest age possible. It is very sad. We will pay a terrible price for this, even more than we are paying now.

The children led into or forced into an early maturity they cannot handle will pay the greatest price.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood but I go get a little passionate when it comes to double standards and what is good for the goose is good for the gander and all that.

Yes I am.

Just so we're clear: What you are saying is that, as a matter of mutual self respect, you and your husband like to engage in an ongoing effort to try to change human nature in everyone around you.

Do I have that about right?

Because it's not making any sense.

What I am saying is that as a matter of self respect that abstinance before marriage at any age is a worthy goal and that sex is a special gift to be given and to have given.

I see. And when they are disappointed (because human nature is human nature), then who cares. They can just tell men "you stink" and become lesbians or old maids. Gotcha.

By the way, I thought men were pigs for having high standards about women's purity. But apparently for women it is a GOOD thing. Another double standard? Just checking.... :)

You are saying that women are easy? I thought that was a characteristic of the guys.

Hmmm. I think I may have misunderstood Bella's original comment. No, I was not saying that women are easy. I, do think, though, that we are getting beyond the range of what I want to discuss on an internet forum.

I just think its ridiculous for men to have the attitude that its just men who can't control themselves and that to look upon women who haven't if they haven't as someone unworthly to marry that's all.

High standards is what is missing in our new world. All standards have been lowered. And if a person has a sense of pride and self-esteem, low standards are not an option. If a person has a sense of morality and lives his or her life according to those standards, the current general lifestyle in this nation is also not an option. A person who has pride and self-esteem will not lower him- or herself to get along with second best. It would not work out anyway.

Only 10. They must not have done this survey over spring break in Daytona...

Note that this number is considered "normal" for the younger crowd; all it is measuring is an opinion. It isn't the statistical average sexual experience. When you consider that most people don't get married for the first time until they are 30 or so, you can be average less than one sexual encounter a year and still end up with more than 10 partners before marriage. Hell, I certainly, have had more than 10 partners simply as a matter of course over the years, but not because I'm an unbridled raging hormone. If I was only interested in "scoring", the number of sexual partners could very easily slip into the hundreds, but I have much higher standards than that (sluts don't float my boat -- quite the opposite).

Just to be clear, I agree with you. But I think it is foolish not to recognize that the consequences for girl who is promiscuous are often much more severe than for a boy.
