The Pat Matheny GroupMetheny is awesome, Lyle Mays on keyboard is superb. I haven't been as impressed with a keyboarder since Kieth Emerson.

All your KennyG are belong to us It's really hard to name just a few great albums because Jazz is such an evolution and so much has been said.....I find a lot of value in any John Coltrane or Miles, Cannonball, etc.
As for modern stuff, anything from Mike Brecker, Joe Lovano, etc.
Too many great artists for me to single out.

In a Silent Way influenced many musicians and was a great album. But I loved John McLaughlin's work in the brew sessions. Extrapolations by McLaughlin was a great album also.

I'm sorry. Were you talking to me? I already dismissed you as a dung beetle. lol And how many TV shows have you played on? Didn't think so. and it's POST, not POSE. Of course if you meant pose, that would have been a clever dig. I doubt you meant pose..lol. If you do play, and play well, I'm impressed. But, I doubt you play jazz if you do know music and play well.

Another newbie piping up?What on earth does that have to do with this discussion?
As for my resume: Don't embarrass yourself. I didn't start this, but you don't want to get throwing names around with me. Trust me on that.

I forgot one unforgetable: Sun Ra! (he,he).

RE:
I usually hate the sound of saxaphones, but the one in Take 5 is just plain cool.Sax player on Take 5 was Paul Desmond, who once described his tone as - like a very dry martini - cool.
Peace, TS

What other albums would any of you suggest for that crossover sound of hard bop and free jazz? Ornette Coleman's early quintets with Don Cherry; Jackie MacLean's Let Freedom Ring and Destination Out; the early works of Cecil Taylor; mid-period Coltrane (especially the albums with Dolphy or Pharoah Sanders).

You're absolutely right. You might have a book with tons of names you could throw out there. I only know what I know, and I don't know you. Since I don't know you then you must be an unknown. Stands to reason, huh?
