What are the best jazz albums?

Metheny is awesome, Lyle Mays on keyboard is superb. I haven't been as impressed with a keyboarder since Kieth Emerson.

It's really hard to name just a few great albums because Jazz is such an evolution and so much has been said.....I find a lot of value in any John Coltrane or Miles, Cannonball, etc.

As for modern stuff, anything from Mike Brecker, Joe Lovano, etc.

Too many great artists for me to single out.

In a Silent Way influenced many musicians and was a great album. But I loved John McLaughlin's work in the brew sessions. Extrapolations by McLaughlin was a great album also.

Sax player on Take 5 was Paul Desmond, who once described his tone as - like a very dry martini - cool.

What other albums would any of you suggest for that crossover sound of hard bop and free jazz?

Ornette Coleman's early quintets with Don Cherry; Jackie MacLean's Let Freedom Ring and Destination Out; the early works of Cecil Taylor; mid-period Coltrane (especially the albums with Dolphy or Pharoah Sanders).
