Maybe I can help. I have a different recipe for Florentines that calls for candied fruits and peels. That recipe calls for greasing and flouring the cookie sheets each time you make a batch. I suppose you could try it, but I'm sure the foil idea is probably best, as florentines are thin and very crisp, and apt to break.

No, my Grandma's Sour Cream Cookies were not filled. They were drop cookies. I may try using the Sour Cream Cookie recipe Mom has, and sour some buttermilk, using vinegar. Somehow I will find a way to make cookies that taste like I remember.

I am going to interrupt cookie talk for just a brief moment to post this very lovely picture. Without these ladie's husband and son, we might not be in the mood to bake any of these wonderful cookies.

As you can see in the caption, this is a replica of the WH tree set up in the Visitors Center.

First lady Laura Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush pose before a Christmas tree decorated like the one in the White House during a visit to the White House Visitors Center in Washington Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001. The exhibit at the visitors center gives tourists an idea what the executive mansion looks like during the holidays, as the White House is closed to tours this season for security reasons. See post #45 for a shortbread recipe. I'm sure you could leave out the chocolate chips if you liked.

I was just browsing some cookbooks looking for something to take to our office potluck lunch next week, and came across this:

Cooking is like love.
It should be entered into with abandon
or not at all.
--Harriet Van Horne

Sometimes when I cook, I fear the only thing being "abandoned" is all hope, ye who enter here!

Could you please post Laura's cookie recipe?

Absolutely. Apologies if someone else beat me to it...I just came back from church and haven't read all the posts yet.

Laura Bush's cookies

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking power
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups packed light-brown sugar
3 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla
3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
2 cups sweetened flake coconut
2 cups chopped pecans (8 ounces)

Prep Time: 25 minutes
Bake time: 17 to 20 minutes
Yield: About 3 dozen cookies

1. Heat oven to 350.
2. Mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in bowl.
3. In 8-quart bowl, beat butter on medium speed until smooth and creamy, 1 minute. Gradually beat in sugars; beat to combine, 2 minutes.
4. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each. Beat in vanilla.
5. Stir in flour mixture until just combined. Add chocolate chips, oats, coconut and pecans.
6. For each cookie, drop 1/4 cup dough onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing 3 inches apart.
7. Bake in 350 oven 17 to 29 minutes, until edges are lightly browned; rotate sheets halfway through. Remove cookies from rack to cool.

Note: For 6 dozen small cookies, use 2 tablespoons dough for each. Bake at 350 for 15 to 18 minutes.

(P.S. These are the cookies that beat out Tipper Gore's gingersnap recipe! Take THAT, Tipper! LOL)

I received this from my best friend today.

Here's some refreshing news:

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.

Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them-from Rudolph to Blitzen- had to be a girl.

We should've known. Only women, while pregnant, would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.

#110 FUNNY!!! Yesterday at dusk I saw five deer galloping across a field and jumping the fence surrounding the woods behind my house. Since none of them sported antlers, they must have been does. One of the joys of living in the country.

Yes right on the pan is fine, just be sure the pan is one of those NON sticky kind if you use it , just to make them easier to come off the pan.

Every Christmas I make Candy Trifles.

CANDY TRIFLES
2 pkgs. (6 oz each) semisweet chocolate, butterscotch or caramel pieces
1 cup Spanish peanuts 1 to 2 cups chow mein noodles In top of double boiler over hot water, melt chocoate pieces. Stir in nuts and noodles uuntil well coated. Drop mixture by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper. Chill until firm. Makes about 3 dozen Candy Trifles. QUICK COOK NOTE: When I'm in a hurry I melt my chococlate, butterscotch or caramel pieces in the microwave for 1-2 minutes max. just until softened. Then I remove bowl from microwave and add remaining ingredients.
