Smallpox is some scary sh-t. Yes, it is! But never fear, the CDC has immunized its employees to tend to the dead and dying (that's us). For victory & freedom!!!

If you are interested in the use of smallpox as a weapon and more about the disease:

HISTORY AND POTENTIAL AS A BIOWEAPON

"Smallpox probably was first used as a biological weapon during the French and Indian Wars (1754-1767) by British forces in North America.3 Soldiers distributed blankets that had been used by smallpox patients with the intent of initiating outbreaks among American Indians. Epidemics occurred, killing more than 50% of many affected tribes. With Edward Jenner's demonstration in 1796 that an infection caused by cowpox protected against smallpox and the rapid diffusion worldwide of the practice of cowpox inoculation (ie, vaccination),4 the potential threat of smallpox as a bioweapon was greatly diminished." (link to AMA paper on smallpox as mass terror weapon)

Then you can go to yahoo.com and in the search area enter: Small Pox. There are several articles without scare tactics that you can read to answer most of your questions!

Who's letting whom go?

They are letting the passengers leave the plane because the person in question shows no symptoms.

That doesn't make sense really.

I hope there is more to it.

According to my friend who is a pharmacist, this is pretty darned close to being right-on.

The upshot is, by the time you are actually contagious, you're so sick you're at home in bed, not mixing it up with other people and infecting them. By the time you're well enough again from the initial onslaught, the pustules have begun to appear and unless you've been living on another planet and haven't heard about the possible threat, then you're going to know not to go around exposing people.

My poor pharmicist friend blows a gasket just about every time the news even so much as mentions smallpox because they mangle the actual facts of the disease beyond recognition just to stir up the panic.

"good cheap mechanic "

Sure. You get out to Hopedale, Mass. often? Look for Astin's on Rt. 140. They're good.
But...you probably won't be able to make the 900 mile drive if you need a mechanic.

Please tell me there is more to this story than this. If they are letting this guy and everyone else go because he is not showing any obvious symptoms...just please someone tell me there is more to this story!

The U.S. needs an island somewhere big enough for an airport for jumbo jets a hospital for something just like this instead of landing on the mainland...that way if it was something like this it could be contained

Does that mean since he's not covered from head to toe in weeping, open wounds, everything is OK?

I think the idea is that if he's not showing any symptoms (fever and all those other early symptoms), then he is not contagious and even if he is infected, he is still in the incubation period.

But they're not letting him go until they do a further diagnosis.
