UPDATE: Passengers Being Let Off Plane At Sea-Tac

SEATTLE - Passengers on board Eva Air Flight 32 are now being allowed to deplane. They were originally held on board due to a smallpox scare.

Earlier, the Newark, N.J.-bound plane was been sealed off after U.S. Customs officials in New York received an anonymous tip that the inbound 747 from Taipei, Taiwan had someone on board carrying smallpox, Port of Seattle officials told KOMO 4 News.

Health officials have evaluated the person on board who was said to have the smallpox, and say he does not exhibit any signs of the virus.

Those passengers who were supposed to debark in Seattle will be allowed off the plane. Those who were to continue on to Newark will stay on the plane.

No word yet as to the fate of the person who was said to have the disease.

update addition to article the guy does not speak english hmmmmmmmmmm............Officials now believe the anonymous tip says the passenger is a carrier of the virus, and not carrying the disease in some sort of container.

Thanks.

What does he speak.

Eva is a Taiwan airline. The crew speak Chinese and English. If he speaks Chinese there would be no problem communicating.

I've never flown Eva but form what I hear it is a very well thought of and professional airline.

Delirium occurs in 15% of the infected population. "I knew it we have all been exposed."

By KOMO Staff & News Services Email This Story SEATTLE - A plane at Sea-Tac Airport has been sealed off after U.S. Customs officials in New York received an anonymous tip that the inbound 747 from Taipei, Taiwan had someone on board carrying smallpox, Port of Seattle officials told KOMO 4 News. It has not been determined if it is a valid threat yet, but officials are not taking any chances. Eva Air Flight 32, bound for Newark, N.J. but in Seattle on a scheduled stop-over, has been quarantined as a precaution. No one is being allowed on or off the plane. Officials now believe the anonymous tip says the passenger is a carrier of the virus, and not carrying the disease in some sort of container. He was sitting in business class. Officials have been in contact with some of the plane's crewmembers, who went and spoke with the person in question. They say the person is not exhibiting any visible signs of smallpox. An emergency medical technician is going on board to make a second assessment of the situation. The situation is further delayed as they await interpreters as the man does not speak English. Again, there has not been any confirmation of smallpox on board. Officials are responding to an anonymous tip. That does not seem like a good idea, to let them leave the plane. It took them HOW LONG to figure out the first guy had Anthrax???? Not good, even if it's a drill. IMO, they just flunked the test.

Yes, pictured of aborted fetuses shouldn't be posted in the middle of a typical thread discussing abortion. There is no need to resort to gross-out, shock techniques, that's what Democrats do, I would think you would be above that. Now if you think it is important to show a picture, simply start a thread and give some type of warning in the title. That way each person can decide whether they want to view something that is clearly objectionable.

Not trying to be the posting police, but sometimes each of us fail to exercise good judgement.

How would they be able to determine whether or not somebody on the plane had smallpox? There are no visible symptoms in the early stages.

Incubation period is 7-17 days, followed by a fever spike and incapacitating muscle aches, after 2-3 days the rash starts to form. ONLY THEN is smallpox contagious.

--this is funny, I am more reading this "tip" as someone smuggling in some smallpox, ie, "they have smallpox". Like in a vial, not that they are sick with it.

I have various sources, yes.

This post has made me want to look it up. I will and when I do will flag you or send you mail.

Thanks, I am interested in seeing it when you find it. I believe the WHO information in my post #101 is what is being most circulated in the medical community.

Dixie, see above post. Here is the pertinent line:

Virus titers in saliva are highest the first week of infection, but infectivity can last up to 3 weeks (until the scabs fall off). Live virus can be cultured from scabs.

This is the info I had in mind when saying it is inaccurate to say it is not infectious early. Titer means virus count.

Later when there is not as much in the mouth, there is a lot more in the pox.

The virus is in saliva and is transmitted as aerosol -- I think that is the term they use. It means, well you know what it means.
