Freeper Suggestions on Where to Retire

I am looking for suggestions from FReepers in lower 48 for city/state recommendations on where to retire.
I have pretty much decided on the western US (excluding the Pacific Coast states) and would lean to the southwestern states. I would stay in Alaska but I am tired of the long winter nights.
Would prefer acreage but you can try to convince me to live in town. :-)
If you know of any on-line newspaper links that have the classified, a URL would be appreciated.
Thanks
Don

I liked Texas! Oh well, I guess if we all loved the same place, it would get too crowded :-)

It's just amazing to see the price of land in some of those states out west. Here in Northern Virginia some prime land costs over $100K per acre.

Whoah, there's one out of the archives. Yeah, you get little Tommie for free. But, he lives in Washington now, so we don't see him nearly as much as the coasts do.

eastern Kansas - and the rest of you can bring it on, I got my nomex undies on!!! ; ) I was stationed at Ft Riley (Junction City) for 2 years (Air Force guy on an Army post) and I loved that area. If I can't find anything out west, Kansas is probably #3 or 4 on my "go back and visit" list. I love Milford Lake.

So, where did you move to? This thread is still going. I just got pinged with a comment today--and you posted back in '01. Weird. So, again, did you ?

Nope, still in Alaska...I was offered a better retirement package if I stayed. So, another 4 years and I'm outa here. I do want to buy this year, though.

Try realtor.com You pick, Depends of what besides acreage you are looking for. Prior to Y2K, an isolated Ozark getaway with backup generators, free running spring, and caves was the thing. You can find most anything you want.

you forgot the State Bird, Billy Clintoon.

Yup. The windy season is just getting really cranked up here. From late February to mid April, you can watch thousands of acres of property pass by.

Places to avoid:
Florida - three seasons: Tourist, Hurricane and Mosquito
Anywhere between the Rockies and the Appalachians unless you like tornados and floods.
East of the Appalachians unless you like crime and humidity.
North of Pennsylvania unless you like snow and cold.
West of the Rockies unless you like high taxes and freeloaders.
Don't leave much really. Check out Asheville and Boone NC, Roanoke and Hot Springs/Harrisonburg/Staunton Va and most of West Virginia.
