[[[ Excite@Home HAS gone dark !!! ]]] -- CableModem customers stranded!
12/01/2001 | Lazamataz

Posted on 12/01/2001 5:52:05 AM PST by Lazamataz

I'm an @home customer, AT&T to be exact. At 8:15 CST, I no longer could access any pages. Not google.com, not cnn.com, none of the old standbys that ALWAYS work.

I've heard a lot about the poaaibility of @Home pulling the plug on 4.1 million customers. Did it happen? The only reason I can connect at all is that my lovely and gracious fiance also has a dialup account for when she is on the road, and I am calling in here using that. I am presently on hold on the AT&T@Home help line. I'll have more information.

Technically, the light is on but no pages are being connected. My Cable Modem is up and connected but nothing loads.

Well congratulations, you are the first to report any contact with AT&T that produced any information(other than "we've had a lot of calls, and can't tell you anything"). Again, how hard would it be to update their webpage or all the info pages that we were supposed to visit when this happened? All they would need to say is that they are in the process of switching. But not even that.

I have no affiliation with AT&T other than as a consumer. In fact I've loved their cell service, excellent coverage, no billing problems, and only once did I tell grandma to flour the children. But once the contract runs out, I'll go Nextel. Principal this time, and I shouldn't have gone with them at all, given their pro-homosexual activism.

But thanks for confirming that they are in the process of switching us over, that's a big relief. Just wondering, do ya hate Reagan too, for breaking up AT&T?

I disagred with The Gipper on the Air Traffic Controler issue - I would have offered some form of >limited< amnesty, and I was against the breakup of AT&T.

However overall, I wasn't and still am not, privey to all the information he could access. Therefore I defer to his judgement because when it comes right down to it.

HE WAS THE MAN!

Good Lord how I miss him, although W. isn't as bad as I feared!

We have about 130,000 people in Sioux Falls now. The crime rate is really low. People can still go out walking at night. Many places cannot say that. We also can get concealed pistol permits in case the oddball jerk comes along.

Keep tweakin till you reach DUDE level.. LOL I did.. not today though:

** Speed 0(down)/0(up) kbps ** (At least 28 times slower than a 56k modem)

ISDN test:

Test running..Downloaded 60900bytes in 6409ms Downloaded 696000bytes in 56231ms First guess is 99kbps quite a slow line - now test 300k

hehee.. yes it is!

capt. you are absolutly right . Cable or DSL is fantastically faster, but it depends on what you use the internet for. I don't upload much, basicaly web pages and email, and for this the 56K is nearly as good, essentialy free, since I use the MSN from several locations. If I were to download lots of pictures and sounds I would definetly need broadband.

Plus the cable modem is flashing like it's being reprogramed.

My modem has four lights. Power, Cable, PC link and Activity. The latter two always flash - when I'm on line. If the first two are flashing, it ain't reprogramming anything. It's trying to lock up and can't because there is no cable connection - i.e. it's been shut down.

Very cool...

I'm afraid that one predates me a bit. My first computer experience was on my uncles Heathkit. Don't remember the model number, but it was of the load-from-cassette sort.

At the office I've still got one of the old original Compaq luggables. It still works too, and like a champ! I'm committed to getting the thing on the network somehow. I want to use it for mail or network monitoring or something...

I haven't been following the Excite@Home saga because I didn't think it affected me.

HOWEVER, our work internet connection is through a Comcast Cable modem, and I am getting more and more concerned about our situation as I read. Is this going to affect all Comcast subscribers, or just in select cities? Where can I get information on this? Thanks!

I set up hotmail to get @home email off the sfba.home.com email server. I have the address if you want it.

Heard on FXNWS that AT&T has moved 86K customers and the rest within 10 days. New service, email etc. Crooks..
