I'm an @home customer, AT&T to be exact. At 8:15 CST, I no longer could access any pages. Not google.com, not cnn.com, none of the old standbys that ALWAYS work.
I've heard a lot about the poaaibility of @Home pulling the plug on 4.1 million customers. Did it happen? The only reason I can connect at all is that my lovely and gracious fiance also has a dialup account for when she is on the road, and I am calling in here using that. I am presently on hold on the AT&T@Home help line. I'll have more information.
Technically, the light is on but no pages are being connected. My Cable Modem is up and connected but nothing loads.

Cox@home customer here, out of Louisiana, and things seem to be working for me this morning.

For what it's worth, I was just able to access my AT&T@Home email using Yahoo Mail. Looks like the Excite's email servers are still operating.

Bur.Adelphia.com (Adelphia Cable going through Burlington, VT) is working fine. I'm near Montpelier.
The week before last, my cable connection in Manhattan, through RCN, was down for about a week. I had just gotten a new laptop and thought that was the problem, but neither of two network cards functioned and then last week suddenly everything was working fine. I doubt that there's any connection. More likely they were hooking up new equipment post WTC, although that's pure speculation. They say none of their switches were damaged on September 11, but my long distance dialing out still isn't working.

Agreed... I don't mean to be overly cynical. They'll do what they can. I'm coming from a long history of dealing with AT&T as a data networking and frame relay customer... and it's been a long frustrating trip. But I've also dealt with all of the other telcos and they are all pretty much the same. I'm pretty sure they could actually use monkeys in the NOCs and service would only degrade slightly.
The only one so far that I've met that actually seemed to have their act together was the old MCI data group (now Cable and Wireless).

I think you're right on track. If Excite had cut
everyone off that would make them the bad guy. But if only AT&T customers are cut off, that makes AT&T the bad guy. (they've certainly had enough practice at being the bad guy).
I think it was an excellent and well-planned business move...from a company that has done nothing but make bad moves previously. How they could turn a silk purse (braodband) into a sow's ear has to be the epitome of incompetence.

Hey Laz, why do you think they call it the 'bleeding edge'.
To: RadioAstronomer
Did you read my post? They have received 850,000 calls so far this morning, and the operator had no idea when service will be returned.Yes, I read your post. I was asking Laz a question since he and I both are in the Chicagoland area. I was wondering what number he used to get thru to AT&T? For that matter what number did YOU use?
To: Clara Lou
No, AT&T's digital broadband is wireless, both phone service and Internet connection. They put a dish on the outside of the house and an 8-hour battery and connection on the inside so that you continue to have service even in a power outage.
Wow. That sounds like a sweet setup. Digital heaven, if it works of course. :) Thanks for that information.

Comcast is a TERRIBLE company You've got that right, they won't put FNN on analog cable here.

Oh, I got the letter and I've been following the Excite case too. What I meant was that AT&T HAD said there would be NO intteruption in service. Then this morning the service was cut.
The letter says "If the proposal to purchase the Excite@Home network is not approved, your service may be temporarily interrupted. . . ."
From what I have read the purchase has not been approved.

Massachusetts reporting in: ATT Broadband still up and running.
They are apparently not involved with ATT@home or excite@home, except for web page hosting.
They used to be TimeWarner, then MediaOne Roadrunner, now ATT Broadband. I guess it's all about where they came from that decides which servers they are connected to.
By the way, I could never give up my cable modem connection even though I can't stand the customer service at ATT. I consistantly get download speeds of 900K to 1.5M. There is no home DSL package that can do that for 40 bucks a month. Not even close.

We recommend that you take advantage of Comcast's Connection Backup Program provided by NetZero and Juno to obtain free dial-up and e-mail service as a temporary alternative. #@!!*$#@! Juno is my ISP, now these **###@@#&&*, are going to blow me out the water, too, and they still won't put FNN on regular cable. Where are the socialists when you need them.

ATT Broadband in Middleburg Florida is still hot as of 12:04 EST. Speeds are in the normal range. 1430 Kbps down, 277 Kbps up. So far so good.
