This is a truly sad day indeed. He died way too young. Who could have imagined that four poor boys from Liverpool would begin a cultural revolution and influence the way many people thought the world over? Amazing. I love their music, by the way. They had already broken up by the time I was born, but they are still a household word to this day. I hope that appreciation for them never dies. They deserve to be pop icons forever.

English guys acknowledging our music. Who would have thought that would happen? Our culture was ridiculed in Britain.

I'll have to take issue, that our culture was ridiculed in Britain (at that time). Actually many of the English groups of that time, got their musical styles from American influences. The Stones, from Chuck Berry. Van Morrison's father collected American jazz, blues, which influenced him, and countless others.

To this day, much of American music (jazz, blues, country western) is much loved and played, in Britain.

My mother actually saw them in concert way back in the 60's!

I saw the Beatles live, at the Hollywood Bowl, about 65/66. We didn't have tickets. Tried to sneak through residential neighborhoods, to get near the Bowl, but kept getting sent away, by police. Finally we reached the ridge across from the Bowl. We were immediately surprised, by yet another policeman, who sent us to an area on the hillside, to sit quietly, so as to not disturb the residents.

Spare me your palindromic penchants, ABBA may be fine but the Beatles are legend; I say this although I never liked their style and never bought a single album.

A man died; his memory lives on --how many among us will that be said for?

Sunrise doesn't last all morning

A cloudburst doesn't last all day

Seems my love is up

And has left you with no warning

But it's not always going to be this grey

All things must, all things must pass away.

George Harrison, 1970

What's a leadpenny?

Born in the year of the lead (zinc) penny. 1943. Some call us war babies.

A dark shadow cast by self-righteous, blind oafs, tracking their mud and manure into a quiet place.

All things must pass.

The arrogant and the ignorant, the anal retentive and the Plastic Fantastic Jehovah's Witlesses will shuffle off. . . .

In several quiet forests, in several quiet mountains, in many streams and voices of those he touched. . . .

This was just a bloke--but who denies he was in the image of the One?

He sought, and he gave, and I for one am richer--

Did I gain as much from a YMCA camp counselor threatening our cabin full of nine-year-olds with eternal damnation?

There was a really dark place in the Western soul which was brightened for a moment by the elan of a band

and, yes, by the talent (and grace) of this man.

The Beatles and my older brother represent some of the best memories of my childhood.

As I try to grow old gracefully, I find that memories are really all we have. Your post about your brother was a nice way to remember him. May he rest in peace. I have had a lot of thoughts today about the 60's and the events surrounding the Beatles.

Perfection in communication; today's penny is over 85% zinc, it only has a thin copper cladding. At least in 1943 the unadorned coin was itself the art of sacrifice, while today the pretension to greater worth is but a simple artifice.

No doubt, the period in which the Beatles came of age was influenced greatly by the war years of 1939-1945 and the anxious adolescence of the post-war period -- for them and for many of us who are contemporaries of the Beatles.

one for my favorite Harrison songs:

THE INNER LIGHT

Without going out of my door
I can know all things on earth
Without looking out of my window
I could know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Without going out of your door
You can know all things on earth
Without looking out of your window
You can know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Arrive without travelling
See all without looking
Do all without doing

(It was the B Side of 'Lady Madonna')

Awaiting You All

You don't need no love in
You don't need no bed pan
You don't need a horoscope or a microscope
The see the mess that you're in
If you open up your heart
You will know what I mean
We've been polluted so long
Now here's a way for you to get clean
By chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
Chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
You don't need no passport
And you don't need no visas
You don't need to designate or to emigrate
Before you can see Jesus
If you open up your heart
You'll see he's right there
Always was and will be
He'll relieve you of your cares
By chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
Chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
You don't need no church house
And you don't need no Temple
You don't need no rosary beads or them books to read
To see that you have fallen
If you open up your heart
You will know what I mean
We've been kept down so long
Someone's thinking that we're all green
And while the Pope owns 51% of General Motors
And the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us
The lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see
By chanting the names of the lord and you'll be free

'Beatles adoration, like Kennedy worship, is primarily a generational thing, however, and the "Baby Boomers" are king of the hill right now. I'm sympathetic to your loss but don't feel it myself beyond what anyone would feel for the lost life of a random stranger.
Parents might take an opportunity like this to talk to their children about *long term* consequences of drugs, alcohol and smoking. Think about it.

My comment, directed to you: You should be informed about the *long term* consequences of going through life, without a heart and soul. Empathy is a trait worth having. Seek to get some.

The funeral has already been held I have heard before the announcement of his death early this morning. I have a feeling unless Harrison was a close freind of x42 he wasn't there. All that can be held now are memorial services.

What a sad day. Harrison was a true spiritual seeker that freed many people to approach God without bagage. He was a major cultural/spiritual force whose impact on contemporary culture is totally underrated. To think that playing Sitar on a pop album could open so many consciences to seek a more spiritual path rather than a self indulgent drug induced path during the sixties. He helped me find God in Orthodox Christianity.

Here's the formula: Child of liberals+no spiritual instruction+likes beatles+sitar sounds mystical+explores Yoga+moves to Buddhism+realize I am a westerner+found Eastern Christianity=perfect blend of eastern mysticism and western rationality.

Thank you George. Your music will live.
