In all honesty, for awhile I've been thinking that next year is UT's year. Good tough schedule for credibility and BCS strength, and an extra year for Mr. Heisman(barf) Simms to get his head straightened out. Would have thought that would have happened after the OU loss, but it hasn't happened yet. Chris' goofed up head is Texas' biggest liability right now.
So go out and win the Alamo Bowl.
I'm live in Alabama, and I don't understand how fans of Bama and Auburn will cheer for the other team to win in championship games.
If Texas was playing a game that would result in a better bowl for us if they won, I would be hard pressed to know what to do. Texas losing is just too precious.
1. 11 games. (Still with me?)
2. 7 conference games, home and home, plus FSU. That's eight total, or four home games every year.
3. Georgia in Jax. That makes nine games total.
I know this is getting tricky for you, but hang in there.
That leaves two games.
If your financial obligations require six home games and you have four committed through SEC and FSU, guess how many you need to get to six. That's right! Two. Which means no road games available outside FSU and the SEC. Can you tell me any major team that doesn't play six (or more) home games?
See, it's not really that complicated when somebody holds your hand through it, is it?
It's not only my opinion that the SEC year after year plays the best ball. If they didn't, the network guys who get paid millions of bucks to get ratings wouldn't pay the most to the SEC. Check the figures, the SEC consistently ranks first in TV money, even though the natural TV market for the PAC10 and Big Ten is larger. What does this mean? It means more people around the country are interested in watching the SEC teams play.
I'm beginning to sense you're a Colorado fan upset with the bad luck of scheduling a pushover game to open with and having it turn out that team is better than expected. If so, I sympathize. In '91 Florida played at Syracuse, a team that had been so-so for awhile. Didn't work out. UF's only loss in the regular season. So it goes.
A sixteen team playoff would be stupid. It would include BYU and a few 8-3 teams from the big conferences. TV money is why the game is so big, and TV would never risk the fluky chance of losing an 11-0 team from a big TV market in the first round to reward either a team that played a chump schedule or a team that lost twice early and again late.
I get upset sometimes with TV's power, sitting in the stadium through endless commercial breaks and ever-changing start times, but he who pays the piper calls the tune. The current system is the best possible considering these realities.
83/84 is the last school year the Illini did it.
Yeah they are a pretty rowdy bunch over here, but after personally experiencing both, including going to the games, I would say the A&M - t.u. rivalry far surpasses it.
even though the natural TV market for the PAC10 and Big Ten is larger
In fact, over the past 20 years, the Big-12 has produced more National Championship teams than any other conference. Although those teams are either Nebraska (7), Oklahoma (3), or Colorado(1). Washington (3) is the only PAC-10 team to lay claim to a National Championship in the past 20 years. The SEC has produced 6 NC teams in the past 20 years. Second however to the Big-12 would be independent teams; Miami (7), Florida St. (6), Notre Dame and Penn St. (pre Big-10) each with 3. The Big-10 has produced 3 NC teams (Michigan (2) and Ohio State (1)) in the past 20 years.

A 16 team playoff is only stupid if you are a team that regularly rides the polls to one of the 2 champ game slots(aka FSU). Why give up the free ride and enhanced chances over other teams for a playoff that would force you to perform on the field. Much easier to smooze the writers for a higher ranking than to actually have to earn it(and I'll admit, Texas also benefits from this pre-season, they have often been overrated). Just ask Washington about last year. And don't tell me that Virgina Tech was the second best team in the country a few years ago. But the polls are a joke. Nothing short of a playoff will prove who is the best, it will only be a subjective popularity contest that will prove who is best among the two prom queens chosen to participate in one game.

But you can't slam Miami's schedule (too much). Pitt is actually better than their record indicates (vastly improved after scrapping the stupid spread offense and going back to conventional pro-set), and certainly gave Miami a better game than Washington did Saturday night. But Troy State was the only non-conference cupcake on their schedule. And I would argue that any team that is 6-4 and beat Mississippi State 21-7 isn't that much of a cupcke. That said, Miami's other non-conference opponents: Penn State, Washington, Florida State. Not bad.
The Big East is down a bit this year, but only a tiny bit, and you can't really fault Miami for the strength or weakness of the rest of the conference. Va. Tech and Syracuse are legit top 15 teams, and Boston College at 7-4 is top 30. Rutgers sucks, Temple sucks, and West Virginia sucks -- but no worse than the Vanderbilts and Kentuckys that Tennessee and Florida get to play.
Florida's non-conference opponents were Marshall and UL-Monroe (not bad and pathetic respectively). The worst non-conference team Tennesee played was Memphis (or was it Notre Dame?). And let's not even discuss the breezy schedule Texas enjoyed this year (but still blew it), or Oklahoma (just beat a really bad Okla. State U. team for chance at glory) but blew it. Miami beat all comers -- those they were supposed to beat, and those who were expected to give them a tough game, often handily.
I can't believe I'm defending Miami, but they are clearly the best team in the country. They spanked FSU, they beat two ranked teams in consecutive weeks by a combined score of 124-7, and will likely beat a third ranked opponent by at least 20 points. They'll prove in the Rose Bowl the better of whoever is matched against them. Take it to the bank.
Yeah, I went to an SEC school, and it could get a bit crazy. But the degree of bad blood year round in Alabama is amazing. UT-A&M is brother against brother, UT-Oklahoma used to be "us" versus the infidel(since 1/2 their team was Texas traitors), but Bama-War Eagles is pure Vietnam cave warfare.
BTW, don't forget to vote over at ESPN for the UT-A&M rivalry as the best. We've made it to the final four.
Oh no, a good rivalry does not require violence.
I have actually lost friends as a result of them going to t.u. We may not throw batteries at each other, but the animosity is the highest of any college rivalry I have seen.
I don't wish physical harm to tea-sips but I will pray form them to lose every game they play. There misery is my pleasure.
Methinks you take this rivalry thing a wee bit too seriously. I can attest to the fact that there are many Longhorns married to Aggies. What's that song, under the covers with the lights out the colors look the same.
Or perhaps the losing habit promotes rabid jealousy and blind irrational hatred by the inferior culture. Please don't tell me I first need to "understand" why you hate us. I'll pray that downtrodden Aggies don't devolve into some anti-capitalist jihad!
P.S. How many Aggies does it take to issue a fatwah?
HABIT? HAHA check the last 20 years bub.
Face it, the big conferences make the game what it is. Why should they reward their underachievers with a shot at another conference's top team when THEY haven't earned it on the field?
With a goofy 16 team playoff, you'd get an NFL look-a-like. A 9-1 team with a playoff spot locked up would rest their good players in the last game thereby screwing the fans who buy the tickets. Not gonna happen.
