Vanity: Worst Baby Names
11/26/01

Posted on 11/26/2001 9:13:15 AM PST by Phantom Lord

Alright, this is a total vanity. I didn't post it under "Breaking News" so relax.

My mother and aunts have been pestering my wife and I about when we are going to have children. Lately, we have taken to coming up with the worst possible names for babies and telling them we are considering names first. Well, they get real upset with some of them and even get angry with us for even considering them.

My mother in law is coming down for Christmas and it is inevitable that when she, my mother, and my aunts get together they will gang up on us about having kids. So, what I need from my fellow FReepers is a good list of really bad baby names to suggest to them as names we are considering. You help and creativity is greatly appreciated.

Oh, the last name is Terwilliger if that helps at all.

Oh, while we're on the vanity...

My wife and I had also been contemplating the baby names, if and when we have children. We have tentatively agreed that she would choose the name, if a girl, and I would choose the name, if a boy. I have decided upon "Patrick Reagan" and she has decided upon "Abigail Jean."

Blaise Terwilliger

I also think Adolf or Adolph would be pretty nasty as well.

You should see us. My wife and I will have dinner and spend the entire time plotting and thinking of the worst names we can come up with to spring on them the next time they ask the question. It is a lot of fun to see their reactions to some of the names. My wife had grandmothers named Yetta, Blema, and Bertha. Boy, those names went over great. As did Hortence, Barney, Moe, Homer, and Clancey. Not to mention Apu.

Someone I know just named a child Milo. I believe this is akin to emotional child abuse.

My wife is from North Carolina, I'm from Virginia, we told her parents we were going to name our daughter Virgilina
(There really is a town by that name).

My wife's cousin named her daughters: Summer Breeze and Sunshine Michelle

So then we told the family we'd name our daughter Winter Solstice.

Fortunately, we had two boys...

Avoid "unusual" names that have become very common names. One of my friends named their child "Caitlyn" because they wanted them to have a unique name and there were 5 Caitlyns in her kindergarten class. Avoid Cody and Hillary for the same reason. Western names are popular with the WT set. Cheyenne, Sierra, Ranger, Wyatt, Jesse James. Avoid race car drivers' names. Avoid rhymers (Lonni, Connie, Johnnie, Ronnie)

There is a boy in my son's class named Rain Forest. I'd avoid that one.

My wifes Grandfathers name is Jacob. She likes it. But they are Jewish and from what she tells me you are not allowed to name someone after someone still alive.

Some MAD-published book many years ago (from before I was even a teenager) had a list of bad baby names. Here's what I remember.
For boys:
Atilla
Darth
Adolf
Betty Sue
