November 24, 2001 -- Is Harry Potter the spawn of Satan?
That's the opinion at one Christian school in southern Australia, where parents voted yesterday to forbid students from reading about the bespectacled wizard and his preteen cohorts.
The vote was just part of a widespread anti-Harry backlash by religious conservatives angered by the best-selling books' blatant celebration of witchcraft and the occult.

Wow. I feel sorry for you if you really believe this pitiful "analogy".
So, Dr. James Dobson for example doesn't have a strong faith in God?
Please. In the "give me a break already!" category, this whole thread is an exercize in mental masturbation. Frankly, I'll never go see the movie. I simply don't care to. Someone above (and I wish I could find their post again) had it exactly right IMO: their parents taught them well enough, that when it came to things like this, their parents trusted their judgement.
I don't sit and wait for someone to "tell" me what to see, and what not to see. I trust my own sensibilities, and faith. I simply have no desire to go see this movie. I see absolutely no redeeming value in this, or about 99% of the rest of the crap Hollyweird puts out anymore.
HOWEVER last year some of the larger stores (Marshall Fields, Carson Pirie Scott) in downtown Chicago were decorated in a Harry Potter theme - for Christmas! This I found beyond insulting and no longer shop those stores, period. A "witchcraft" theme might be suitable for halloween, but definitely not for Christmas.
If I remember our discussion correctly you are referring to the rapture? Hardly discredited, still very much in discussion as it is supported by scripture. I guess we'll just have to wait a few years and see.
In any event, why try to slam this man just because he points out truth about the HP witchcraft invasion of our schools?
God Save America (Please)
You.
Born again believers will understand that it is not good or right or in the will of God for them to give place to this in their lives.......so they will dismiss the book..and the movie for what it is.
In other words, you're saying that, I cannot really be a "born again believer" because I've read Harry Potter and allow my children to read/see Harry Potter and have not dismissed the book.
If the shoe fits wear it! You will not go to hell for reading Potter or taking your kids to the movie, they are simply a symptom of deeper spiritual problems of rebellion and disobedience ..neithor of which marks a believer
Harry Potter is not a threat to my faith, or that of my family.
I am sure of that..but interesting that you feel confident on the spiritual impact on your children...and the impact of your direct rebellion against the will of God..or do you care?
Someone that has made Jesus LORD and Savior wants to,chooses to,desires to,seeks to be obedient in all things. Not because they must..but because it is the desire of the "new heart" they have..
Pray for GW and the Truth!
They mocked and spit on Jesus.....they beat Him with whips....and then they cried out " ...give us Harry Potter", "crucify Him" ...ohh no wrong time frame..that is today! =========================
Wow. I feel sorry for you if you really believe this pitiful "analogy".
Actually I felt sorry for your bigotery and responded in kind..do I believe that analogy?.Ater reading this thread where am I wrong?
I see them as very similar to the homosexual assault on our children (Heather has two mommies?). There is a teaching guide out (Exploring Harry Potter by Elizabeth Scaher published by Beecham Publishing) that shows teachers how to incoporate these things into every aspect of the curriculum.
The non-Christians get all bent out of shape at the Christians when we try to get prayer or the ten commandments into the schools. The liberals and liberal wanna-bes scream out "separation of church and state" and "stop shoving your religion down our throats" and other such nonsense. But just once let us try to stop YOUR religion from being crammed down our throats and you start screaming at us as being intolerant and censorius.
Either all religions, including Christianity, are allowed or no religions, including secular humanism and witchcraft/paganism are allowed.
Since Christianity is not allowed in the government schools, harry potter and other pro-witchcraft propaganda should be allowed either.
Concerned Women of America has an excellent article on HP in the November/December 2001 Family Voice magazine.
Harry Potter: Seduction of the Occult
Couldn't find it posted so I'll post it.
God Save America (Please)
I'm simply thankful that neither I, nor my family have to stand in judgment before you.
I do appreciate your sincerity and your faith. But your judging my "rebellion" or "disobedience" is simply out of line. Other than my posts you have no way of knowing anything about me, my faith, my family, or my relationship with God.
Perhaps you should just check your own shoe size.
That is exactly the problem..but many can not make the distinction or can not see the potential spiritual harm..
Are you sure of that? Was Jesus a fool or a liar? What about Paul?
A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. (Acts 19:18-20)
You mean individual names like Eric Poliner, Gary Feenstra, Caryl Matrisciana, Patrick Matrisciana, Pat Robertson, David Williamson, Elizabeth Mounce, Stephen Mounce, Rev. Dan Larson, David Williamson, Cynthia Kersey, Rev. Robert McGee, or groups such as Family Friendly Libraries, Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, Eagle Forum...? How about a little sample of anonymous posters from ABCNEWS.go.com. Do anonymous people count?
Should We Ban Harry Potter?
"The Harry Potter books do teach a religion a religion of satanic worship. It's just packaged neatly in entertaining books to hook children." janice2560
"Harry Potter takes a soft-porn approach to witchcraft. Would you give your kids Playboy in the hopes they would grow up into kiddy porn peddlers? Think it is innocent if you like." TrishJD7
"This is not a game. This is REAL. People's souls and even their mortal lives are at stake. Please, do not treat this like just a 'fantasy.'" DianeDiablo
"Witches, magic, sorcerers, spells, and the like ARE undeniably related to the occult. Why would we applaud the child that turns off the TV and opens up a Potter book?" 2Peter3Nine
"I am amazed that out of the same mouth that says 'God bless America' comes 'Let them read Harry Potter books.' Those books are against God and all He stands for." athomemom7
"The Harry Potter series is a tremendous threat to the children of this country. Satanism is alive and well in today's society and this cult relies on the ignorance of masses to further their cause." irises1958
I'm not running from your question. It's just that it's a stupid question, like asking for a list of 84 people who object to Britney Spears outfit at the MTV Awards. You asked a stupid question.
At least until you and your friends start building the camps to house the focus of your stained-sheet paranoia.
LOL, This from a man who's running around these threads like a chicken with his head cut off, screaming about a children's book turning people into real, honest-to-gosh, witches. That's rich. What's next, boxes of Lucky Charms causes kids to become leprechauns? (just to throw my own strawman out there)
Well, this has been fun. Talk to you later, my HurdyGurdy friend.
I never said this. You have a difficult time with the truth, don't you? Is that you, Bill?
I have yet to hear anyone say Potter should be banned from publication. I think you've been in the contrails again.
Harry Potter is valid literature. It displays well constructed narrative, well developed characters, clean language and a plot line suitable for young readers. The answer then is yes, it is appropriate for schools. A hyperbolic attempt to compare it to a Pokemon cartoon is invalid, as you well know.
Fundie parents are stopping their children from reading Harry Potter, which is all fine and good.
Just what we need. Another bigot.
(My funny retort about how you linger like a skunk at a garden party.)
But in all honesty, there are many who would like to prevent anyone from reading Harry Potter.
Name at least 50 then.
(I ignore this stupid question and go on...)
Harry Potter is valid literature.
So is Catcher in the Rye but I don't want my 2nd grader reading it in school. It has no business in the schools. Parents can let their kids read Potter all they want. But it doesn't belong in the schools.
Sure it belongs in the schools, for the reasons I have outlined in my previous post. (That it is a piece of literature with clear language, character developement and plot suitable for the average elementary school aged child). You have made no case for why it should be banned from public schools, other than because you are a displeased and angry little man, much to be pitied.
I noticed you bravely ran from the question of naming 50 people who want to ban Potter.
You mean individual names like Eric Poliner, Gary Feenstra, Caryl Matrisciana, Patrick Matrisciana, Pat Robertson, David Williamson, Elizabeth Mounce, Stephen Mounce, Rev. Dan Larson, David Williamson, Cynthia Kersey, Rev. Robert McGee, or groups such as Family Friendly Libraries, Focus on the Family...blah, blah, blah...
You again have bravely ran away from making any case for why it should be banned from public schools, other than because you are a displeased and angry little man, much to be pitied.
I have yet to hear anyone say Potter should be banned from publication.
Ah, nice try at moving the goal posts HurdyGurdy. We have been discussing whether Potter should be banned from public schools all along, and now that you've been humiliated on that front, you fall back and claim that you really meant "banned from publication".
You are played easily like a hurdy gurdy. Just crank the crank.
It was fun. Ta!
Pretty darn sure. Of course, you could prove me wrong by providing a repeatable and verifiable process by which one can cast a spell. It's amazing that nobody has been able to do this, if evil demonic forces are really all around us and can easily be harnessed by witches.
Was Jesus a fool or a liar? What about Paul?
I don't know, but "misinterpreted" is another possibility.
It's ironic you should post that. We are in the process of planning to move into another home and we are in a quandery about what we are going to do with all these books, my daughter's and mine. They will easily take up a large room, and my wife has been vigorously campaigning for us to give them away or sell them, but we absolutely will not.
My daughter is a voracious reader with the largest library I've ever seen a 10 year-old have. Just because she has no "Harry Potter" books doesn't mean we are "interfering with" her "love of reading." Her love of reading is proceeding along just fine, thank you.
