The advantage of fly-by-wire is that you can fly that thing from the control tower -- theoretically. Nice defense from hijackings.Any aircraft, theoretically, can be flow from the ground. Fly-by-wire has nothing to do with it.

Look to Westchester County NY, not the Diamond State, to find them.

One of the first steps will be to look at the maintenance records of that engine-- when was the last time is was dye tested and X-rayed. How many hours til or since overhaul? Who did the work? Genuine factory parts or Turkish knock-offs (a-la Value Jet). Facts needed here.

Thank you. Everyone please read post 664, which details what is by far the most likely scenario.

All of us are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. I think the American public is generally against illegal immigration, but this country is made up of it's immigrants

what is the likelihood...American Airlines plane..poor maintenance...leading to explosion.
For a given flight, probably less than one in a hundred thousand.
Of course the odds that a terrorist bomb would blow up this particular plane is also less than one in a hundred thousand.
Conclusion: this news story never happened. ;-)

NO, they not investigating bomb on board. They are conducting a routime, post-fatal crash NTSB-FAA-CAB driven investigation, in which FBI plays a part, as they always do.
There is every indication that there was no bomb and it is a rather (unfortunately) routine first stage impeller (fan) failure with penetration through the engine containment shroud into the spar, causing failure of spar, loss of wing, loss of control, impact with gound, loss of life.
I hate to use word shroud, as someone will start involving the Shroud of Turin.....

It's highly probable you may see an example of the old elementary school "rumor" game.
Through media reports quoting each other I could easily, almost EXPECT, the "FBI says there was an explosion on board" mutating into "FBI says there was a bomb on board."
Of course, to the loon moron conspiracy contigent, even the SLIGHTEST confusion or change in reported facts in the first few minutes after a complex event has occured is incontrovertible evidence of conspiracy or cover-up.

Are you certain that the crescent moon will not be seen in
Islsamic countries until Saturday? Immediately after the crash I thought of their calender and wondered. I will not accept that this was anything other than an fanatical Islamic terrorist attack. Just think back to the early video released by the Taliban where they told their fellow muslims to stay out of planes and tall buildings because more planes would fall from the sky. Think about the Iraqi television station that reported last week that something was planned for mid-November. They found a gap in security and they took advantage of it. While we were getting back to normal they just continued plotting against us.

Just because there is an explosion on board doesn't mean a bomb did it. Give me a Freakin break. I feel the same way, it's like a smack in the face. It just happens to be two months later, it just happens to be in the same area, it just happens to be an explosion, it just happens during a time of high alert...BUT NOOO, could be an accident - enough to make you scream "oh shut up already with the accident crap!" at the TV!

American Airlines flight 587 from New York City to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic crashed shortly after take-off from John F. Kennedy airport on November 12, 2001, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said. The wide-body Airbus A-300 twin engine passenger jet crashed five miles from the airport in a residential area of Rockaway, in the Queens borough of New York City, said FAA spokesman William Shumann. (Michael Sales/Reuters Graphic) - Nov 12 10:50 AM ET |
767 pilot is on CBS trashing CBS's "so-called aviation expert Kelly", explaining why the expert's analysis is "exactly wrong".

Not picking on you texasbluebell. It's just the mind control these media types use. Repeating the same thing over and over (whether its true or not) to hypnotise the viewer.

..They complain that it would take TOO LONG to X-RAY all bags for bombs...Ridiculous. It could be done at the ticket counter, especially while you're waiting for your ticket to be processed. It can also be done once your bag is taken and put on that conveyor belt leaving the ticket area.

A timed bomb is EXACTLY what this sounds like. The plane was supposed to leave at 8:00 a.m. By 9:15 it would have been over water and no traces of the plane, the recorders, or the passengers would have been found. This is Lockerbie all over again - remember Pan Am 103 was also late and changed course, which was why the bomb exploded with the plane over land instead of water. Stupid terrorists again. They seem to be completely dense about the fact that planes rarely leave on time, especially when they have a full complement of passengers going abroad, as this one did today. The black boxes will be recovered from this plane which will tell us a lot, just as with Pan Am 103, and if there was a bomb, the materials will be found in the wreckage.Barometric trigger would be the way to go. But it could be they have a reason for not liking or trusting barometric triggers. Plus the bomb may have been a rushed job and the bomb trigger only knew how to do it with a timer.
An airplane taken down by a terrorist will make up everyone take notice. If the plane falls into the water (the optimum) or crashes on land is secondary.

This is the most sane, logical reasoning for the analysis of data at any time of mass media "real-time" reporting. Me thinks you must be an old-timer.
