>BTW: this puts the kabosh on the stupid media Gore recount.

Yes. The media recount was _first_ scheduled to come out in September, but got delayed because of the 911 attacks. Now, when the story does come out, we have another plane crash...

What did Goldfinger say? Once is chance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action...

If Klinton were in office, and a "coincidence" like this happened, would anyone believe it wasn't #3?

Passenger Jet Crashes in Queens, NY

By DIEGO IBARGUEN
Associated Press Writer
November 12, 2001, 10:27 AM EST

NEW YORK -- An American Airlines jetliner en route from New York to Santo Domingo crashed moments after takeoff Monday into a residential neighborhood five miles from Kennedy Airport, authorities said.

The plane, an Airbus A300, had a capacity of 275 people. There was no report of the number of casualties, either on the plane or on the ground, where several buildings were reported to be ablaze.

Thick, black smoke could be seen miles away from the crash in the Rockaways section of the borough of Queens.

John Maroney, 47, who lives on 129th Street near the site of the crash, said an engine from the plane dropped on a gas station near his house. "The whole house jumped," he said.

"We were all out there with fire extinguishers and hoses but we couldn't do much," he said.

American Flight 587, a wide-bodied, twin-engine plane, crashed two minutes after it took off at 9:15 a.m.

Bill Schumann of the Federal Aviation Administration said there was no immediate indication of what caused the crash.

There was no immediate indication that terrorism was to blame, but the Office of Emergency Management said all bridges and tunnels in the city were closed except to emergency vehicles.

All metro area airports were closed following the crash near Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue.

The mayor canceled his morning events and headed to the scene.

One eyewitness reported debris falling from sky, and told the Fox News Channel four homes were on fire.

Another told CNN he was 40 blocks away and saw "Just a lot of smoke. Tons and tons of smoke. You can see emergency vehicles heading to area. Lots of people are standing in the streets. It's very tense."

The crash came two months after the attack on the World Trade Center, which was destroyed by two Boeing 767s hijacked out of Boston's Logan Airport. One of the planes was operated by American, the other by United.

The airline told The Associated Press it had no immediate comment.

At the United Nations, where ministers from the 189 U.N. member states are gathered for the General Assembly, stunned diplomats stood in the corridors watching television screens as smoke rose from the crash site.

"Terrible," said U.N. Assistant Secretary of State Danilo Turk, shaking his head as he rushed into a meeting of foreign ministers from the United States, Russia and Afghanistan's six neighbors to discuss a post-Taliban government.

The crash site is a neighborhood of multi-family homes, three or four stories high, said Sanford Bernstein, general manager of a weekly Rockaways paper, The Wave.

Only a block or two from Jamaica Bay, the neighborhood includes a small shopping strip. A Roman Catholic church and elementary school are also nearby, he said. Schools were closed Monday for the Veterans Day holiday.

Microsoft+Security. An oxymoron if ever there was one. I think you just burned your own argument.

Besides, when you say "control tower" who exactly do you refer to? Departure, arrival, mulitple enroute controllers, every controlled airspace along the route (Class B, C, and D)? On a cross-country flight you could have 100 seperate control towers. No thanks.

RE:Technology exists to authenticate wireless network traffic (e.g. RADIUS, going into Windows XP). That's to say, the plane's autopilot won't respond to anyone but the control tower personnel.

Oh man, you know Hillary reads these boards. You just gave her the idea to blame this on the right wing nuts

Drudge said last night he figured it'd be over with by 1 or 2

If he were Middle Eastern, he would probably have the FBI on his doorstep...

It is funny to hear the talking heads report that the officials say there was no warning about terrorist activity so this must not be a terrorist event. Did they say the same thing after the FIRST plane crash into the WTC.

You know being a quad with severe med.care needs is a blessing since the Airlines stopped accomadating me years ago.
Funny how so many people take jumping on a plane for granted. Nothing can be that important I have accepted. Kng Vanity son of Oceanperch

I hate to say this, but it would not take a large bomb to cause the explosion described by the eyewitness. One small block of C-4 with a barometric trigger would do the trick.

Yes sir! 100% agreement! I keep hearing reports of (part of) the wing (with engine?)  falling in one place and the rest of plane a few blocks away. Were the terrorists hoping for it to crash into the ocean where retrieval would take many more days??? Like flight #800

The airport is corralling all ground workers as I type...Going through employee rosters. (my speculation)

If you're flying into BWI, your worst problem is likely to be getting your luggage back. Baggage claim positively sucks at BWI.

Prayers to you for a safe flight.

Muslims should be Deported and put in Internment camps.

I would be satisfied with the first half of your suggestion.

This has all the earmarks of a terrorist bombing!

I have to agree. Here's why:
-It is on the Monday closest to the 2 month anniversary of 9/11
-It is in NYC.
-The crash is in a high population area.
-The crash appears to be as a result of an explosion.
Have we had enough YET? Deport these creeps NOW!

I can definitely feel the difference...the Airbus models bank hard. It takes me two days to recover from a flight on that type of plane.

When my husband heard it was an Airbus, he said, it figures. He hates to be stuck on those planes.

Friend of mine in Manhattan has been watching the military jets buzz about. It was probably military.

Rudy asked for air cover from the military.

Rudy: 'We are Being Tested, One More Time'...

And it aint gonna stop until we get all of these maniacs out of our country and stop letting them in. Pretty obvious.

If I were in central planning in the OBL organization, I would definetely want to bring down a plane or two just prior to the most traveled period of the year. If people don´t fly his holiday season, I imagine it will cripple the industry.

However, unless (god forbid) another plane goes down, this will be another unrelated incident. Which I guess it could be but I wouldn´t bet my tin foil hat on it.

WABC RADIO. A guy is on the phone reporting he was in Jamiaca Bay, had the plane fly over and saw the TAIL of the plane come off. He said he and police boats saw the whole tail in the water.

Two crash sites, one where an engine went in and one where the plane went in.

(Cavuto- that was an F-15, not an F-16 that went by.)

Scads of police down there.

Still no official word from American Airlines.
