McCain, Bayh Applaud President Bush's Emphasis on Volunteerism

November 9, 2001
-- Senators' "Call to Service Act" Would Create Volunteer Homeland Defense Corps -

Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Evan Bayh (D-IN) today made the following statement:
"We applaud President Bush for issuing a call to service in his address to the nation last night. Declaring that 'Our citizens have new responsibilities,' the President endorsed the creation of new opportunities within AmeriCorps and SeniorCorps programs for public safety and public health efforts.

"Earlier this week, we introduced legislation that would create a new role for AmeriCorps in homeland defense duties. Our legislation would dramatically expand service opportunities under AmeriCorps and create a new short-term military enlistment option. We look forward to working with President Bush to create more opportunities for Americans to serve their country, and to meet the challenges of a new age.

"This cause transcends party or ideology and unites all citizens in service to their nation, in both civilian and military capacities.

"We anticipate working closely with the Administration to enact this legislation. The time is right and the need is urgent."

Defund the Peace Corps, Americorps, and Senior Corps, refund the taxes or move to DoD budgets.

"How nice. Our version of the "Hitler Youth" program."

........only AmeriCorp's version will be made up primarily of pi**ed-off "homey's", thrilled at the idea of being able to tell Whitey what to do. Think I'm kidding?

More than likely McCain rushed to be out in front of the president's initiative.

I first read about Americorps in James Bovard's excellent book, Feeling Your Pain : The Explosion and Abuse of Government Power in the Clinton-Gore Years . Disgusting organization.

"But why not let Americorps stand for something positive as long as it's here to stay?" Because all these unconstitutional additives to an already big govt. become political 'tools' for the corrupt. Americans are said to be the most generous people in the world, just tell us what needs done, and trust us to do it.

I kind of thought it would be mostly rich liberal white college kids promoting government spending and leftist programs. I can't believe Bush is for this. Perhaps he conned us conservatives to get into office, or maybe he's gotten to desire the approval of the media. Whatever the reason, it's awful.

McCain endorsing a massive, wasteful, useless national service program is no surprise. He's still carrying a torch for "mandatory volunteerism," one of the funniest oxymorons ever to come out of government. I just hope Bush doesn't really back him on this.

I say exactly what I said yesterday.

(1)What is the total pricetag?
(2)Is this permanent or does it have a sunset provision?

Or maybe he's playing politics. This bill was just introduced and is a long way from becoming law. There's no reason for W to create unnecessary enemies at this point in a piece of legislations life.

Yet, a review of your posts reveals anything President Bush does or says seems alright with you ... I, on the other hand, have at least been critical of my guy--particularly on the immigration question (endorsing Bush's amnesty plan for illegal Mexican aliens). I voted for Bush (though I should say voted against Gore) and support him as CIC. But I still find his captaincy of the ship of state leaving a lot to be desired. Even though he hasn't yet grounded us on the rocks and shoals of the troubled waters we're in (ala Blubber and Hildabeaste), he has managed to make a few of us seasick with economic policies (I have to give him a "B" on the fight against terrorism and will gladly turn it into an "A-plus" when I see ground troops).

Bush is throwing McCain a bone, so he will stop barking.

McCain finally found a liberal issue that he could support which would not be offensive to the Republican party. What can we say? The idea is innocuous. Let all the cowardly liberals do volunteer work, here at home. The adults will do the real fighting in this war.

I say Bush is a nice guy, and proves over and over again that he is willing to work with anybody... and anything.

It's a problem, wouldn't you say?

The President shouldn't be working with "anybody" and "anything".

If we're going to "move on" about All Things Clinton...I think it ONLY right that the President should flush some of his predecessor's "brilliant ideas" down the crapper!

If you are spending your time reading all my posts, you need to get a life. Two things I have not agreed with the President on: the Education Bill, which I think Kennedy hijacked, and this proposal, IF it is what McCain says it is and IF the President really supports it. Since I haven't seen the bill and because Bayh is notorious for claiming credit for things that are not what they seem, I am suspicious that the bill the President is backing is this one.

If this is what he is backing, well, I think he is making a mistake, and I won't agree with him on this issue.

Why are you attacking my support of the President? Is there a requirement that we all agree with you?

(A) Don't you start with me, girlie.

(B) I think you missed the conversation-flow between dumbdog and myself.

(C) Don't make me come over there.

Interesting question...that's exactly how I feel when it comes to Sen. McCain!

Look...you like McCain, I don't. He has shafted my guy one too mamny times. You don't like President Bush much...that's ok. It's just the way it is.

I still am waiting to see what the actual bill is and where the President comes down in support. Then we can have further discussion.
