I'm not sure, but I think they kick it out the back of a C-130 from a relatively low altitude.

Bomb descends by small parachute. With 15,000 pounds of bang, you do not need much accuracy!

They drop the bomb from 6000' according to the article (last paragraph). While that is still pretty high, with this kind of power, accuracy is of secondary importance.

The article didn't say "30,000 feet." It said that minimum altitiude was 6,000 feet.

IR and GPS technology is very new in terms of dropping bombs. Ever heard of bomb sights? Go back to sleep or a few read WWII novels. If you can't read, then you can watch war documentaries on tv.

Also explains why they wern't used before...as need to make shure all ground to air is adequately supressed.

Those cargo planes are slow flying and vunerable

As has been said here many times in the replies, the bomb hovers in on a parachute, close to ground and then goes boom! The delivery is dropped at 6,000 feet or higher (not 30,000).

What hasn't been said here is a comment about the "overpressure." This thingy makes a 1,000 lb sq in overpressure which--aside from those things not blown to small burning pieces--crushes everything crushable to death. That includes all vertebrates, from the surface down to very, very deep (how far?--some expert FReepers here know.)

Read the article... they are dropped from about 6000 feet and with a blast that big, you don't need to be accurate.
