"as they came out of the house, the shit hit the fan," one senior officer says. "It was like an ambush. The Taliban were fighting with light arms and either [rocket-propelled grenades] or mortars." The team immediately began taking casualties and evacuated.

Something is missing from this story, who was covering the rear of the entry team? Or was intelligence so bad that resistance wasn't believed to be present?

Not sure about this report at all, but there have been other references to fierce fighting during this incident, so I do believe there is something to it. Somalia and Blackhawk Down come to mind. We need to have good intelligence, good military leadership, and superior numbers of forces to prevent the same things from happening in Afghanistan.

Hersh's source(s) are officers promoted by Clinton.

That's the only reason that an officer would confide anything in a snake like Hersh.

The result here is a portion of truth with a strong politically-motivated defeatist spin.

This is very dangerous.

Bush has alot of weeding-out to do in the military.

It had better get done quickly.

One does not know whom or what to believe. Those who head our government are bunglers and congenital liars. Those media creatures who report love treason and/or sedition and are known to create 'stories.' Time will tell. (I note there are no longer pictures of troops boarding airplanes in green light, splashy photos of guys parachuting, stories on how the enemy are going to be killed and their things broken. This aspect has the smell of disaster.) Once agin time will tell.

Well, that's one "senior officer" who should be court-martialed.

The intensity and ferocity of the Taliban response "scared the crap out of everyone," a senior military officer tells Hersh.

did they respond as soon as they saw the raid on CNN?

It is difficult to believe Hirsch in the light of the information freely and timely released by Pentagon previously.

For example, this 18 MEG mpg video of the inclusion.

From the DoD News Briefing - the actual incursion at night (MUST SEE for FREEPERS with adequate bandwidth)

IMO, the DOD has been more open, frank, and detailed -- in contrast to Hersch in this matter.

First; I would like to say thanks to all the fools might give any credibility to SH's BS. And, second, to those of US who know SH is just plain - full of crap, but go ahead and join the post with our contentious replies - "geez, what's wrong with us - why can't we just let SH's crap settle to some lesser position of not even being recognized as a legitimate post!?!"

Oh yeah (almost forgot) - 'duck Frudge' and his sensationalizing CRAP!

This could be some clever disinformation, to get them to think we'll never, ever be going in and we didn't get any idea where OBL is hiding from the raid. If so the assault may happen soon.

Seymour Hersh is has always been the most anti U.S military reporter there is. He's worthless piece of crap so I take his spin with a grain of salt

And any senior military officer that would leak, to of all people Seymour Hersh, would have to be a bottom of the barrel, gutless, backstabbing, Clinton promoted, piece of crap

It is probably true that 12 solders were wounded. Seymour laid some cash on some low ranking orderly (the 'high official') and got that much info. The rest is probably plagiarized from some old novel. Enough truth to get the story published, and a pile of lies that cannot be confirmed because his sources are confidential. This guy is a career liar.

Well, this report "confirms" a previous one, or is this the same guy? I dont know if I believe it. However, if something like this DID happen, I dont doubt that they would in fact keep it a secret. Maybe the "failure" of this mission is one reason the US has started really bombing the Taleban frontlines position in an effort to help the northern alliance....

I know two people in the miltary. A C-5 pilot and a tank driver. A Lt Colonel and a grunt. But both are exactly alike. This is what they signed up for, this is what they do and both know they might die doing it. Articles such as this from simpering snotty liberals do not amuse them.

I am proud of these men. If they were wounded, thank God that they were not killed. It does seem that reporters often want to paint any military incursion as one which has no effect on the campaigners unless they themselves are killed. Then the reporters, media mavens, can say, "See the US is suffering loss in a war in which they cannot win." It does seem that the media of the Big 3 types are often anti-American and want our military to suffer a blow so the media can then say , "What bullies the USA are." I can only pray that many more Special Ops incursions occur and that our people are safe but I do want them to continue to seek out and destroy. That is their annointed job and all Americans should support them. When the body bags do come, our prayers, support and resolve should stiffen against our barbarian enemies, not go pacifistic and weak.

Rumsfeld better unscrew that mess and quick. Right now, I prefer to believe it was an intelligence breakdown and poor planning. There should be no doubt that a force of Delta's reputation cannot acquit itself in battle. In any case, the most unpleasant thing about the report is that it got out.
