Michael O'Brien on Harry Potter.

Yes. Harry Potter is one long advertisement for the occult and it is aimed squarely at children.

Skip Harry and see Lord of the Rings instead.

A witch's group in England reports a large increase in interest from kids which they attribute to Potter. A mere coincidence I'm sure.

I read that was U.L.

Shalom.

As usual, fundamentalist LOSERS manage to run off a zillion potential converts. You know who makes me question my faith the most? Not the atheists, but the evangelicals....

Well said. Of all the atheists I know I've never had one try to *convert* me and they seem to all keep their beliefs (or lack thereof) to themselves.

I know an equal amount of evangelicals and I can't tell you how many times I've had to have "the talk" with them i.e. "if you keep insisting on trying to convert me to your thinking our friendship will be in jeopardy"

I am a evangelical Christian. But I believe there is too much fuss over a slightly above average, way over-promoted children's book series. If this book had been published by a small publishing house with an even smaller promotion budget it would never have become a best seller. Scholastic presented the book as a kiddie "Gone With the Wind". The hardcover books are printed on extra thick paper, with wide margins and spacings between the letters. It gives the illusion of being a grown-up novel. Months before "Harry Potter" arrived in North America the books promotion machinery was up and running in America. If "Goosebumps" books had been bundled and promoted as well as the Harry Potter books they would have been as popular as Harry Potter. Far superior to any "Harry Potter" book are the "Lord of the Ring" trilogy and the "Narnia Chronicles" that feature "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Parents, teachers and other grownups it would be silly to proclaim "Harry Potter" books as the greatest novel series for children ever written without reading the other classics of children's literature first. Relax, let the kids enjoy the series at their pace with their friends. They do not need or want your help to enjoy these books. Many a parent or teacher has wrecked a book through overkill enthusiam. If the "Harry Potter" books are still read eagerly by our kids' kids then perhaps "Harry Potter" books will join the rarified ranks of "Classic Children's Literature".

"BTW..the books "Heather Has Two Mommies" is cute and easy to read too, would you like your kids reading that? Why not? As long as they're reading, right?"

You, as a parent, have the right to dictate what your children read.

I, as a parent, have the right to dictate what my children read.

You, as another child's parent, have NO right whatsoever to dictate what my children read. If I want my children to read 'Heather has Two Mommies' and 'Harry Potter', there's not a heck of a lot you can do about it.

As for Harry Potter, it's harmless fantasy. When I was 10, I was a big fan of Dungeons and Dragons. I'm a Christian today. However, there are some so-called "religious righties" that are scared silly that someone, somewhere is having fun outside of a church setting. That's all the silly anti-Potter flap is about.

As for "Up" Chuck Morse, he's appears to be a

Oh no, witchcraft you say! We'd better muster the troops to the town square for a good old book burning party. If we're lucky, maybe we can find a few of those child witches to burn, too, while we're at it. </sarcasm>

Potter is insidious devil worship.

You must have read the books too. You devil worshipper!

you have kids trying to kill their teachers with spells

Oh really? A wave of teachers killed by magic, how did I miss that little news item?

BTW kids were interested in magic and such when I was a kid...this was well before the Potter books existed. Everybody grew out of it by high school.

You have the right to call yourself anything you like, but just because you call yourself a "Christian" doesn't make you one.

NOW I understand the term "freeptard". Thanks.

By the way, I think you could sue if you had given your life to Jesus after watching a televangelist, but not if you sold your soul to Satan after watching a sitcom. That would be politically incorrect, someone would find a reason that it had something to do with the separation of church and state.

Dear Kettle,

Yes, I am black.

A friend of mine used to say, "Kettle, Pot is not impressed."

Well said! One of the biggest problems that some evangelicals have when it comes to teaching others the Bible is not the "world" -- it's themselves! There are some screwballs who feel like they have to be some kind of self-appointed "moral busybodies". Their aim is NOT at saving the lost -- it's at keeping their nose in other people's business 24/7.

Live and let live, folks! We live in a free nation, not some Protestant version of the Taliban.

My faith is as strong as ever, because He (the Lord JESUS CHRIST) is faithful.
