Talk show host Tom Sullivan just reported that during a press conference Gov. Davis said he was notified that there is evidence that terrorists plan to target the Coronado Bridge (San Diego), the Golden Gate & Bay Bridges (San Francisco) and an LA Bridge (didn't catch the name) tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 2nd.

No wonder California, complete with the Hellywood land of Sodom, is sucking up to Bush.
Now they need their own sorry butts protected, eh?
They're not running to Clinton nor Gore for assurance now are they, huh?
They know the right is right, but our lifestyles are too much work. They'd rather get their wealth for free, and blame their lifes failures on everyone else.
This is good. It's about time they woke up and smelled the coffee!
They know who to run to when they need a real man in the Whitehouse!
Besides that, I hope the people in California are safe. I wouldn't want anyone to suffer the fate of the WTC. No way. Even liberals. ( hack, I can't believe I said that)

RE: #274, Orlando:

I would think it safe to assume that it is a multi-pronged attack involving cells in several states, and possibly even several countries, timed to occur nearly simultaneously. That is the Al Qaeda MO.

It is more likely a diversionary tactic if it is anything at all.

The trouble is, that those who live near the bridges will now take an alternate route. And for many, the alternate routes will not work because of the number of vehicles. In short order, they have succeeded in bringing down another part of our economy. They do not need to do anything more, they have done it. Sign me no more bridges, no more mail, no more flights...

To them an American is an American...no matter what the political, moral, ethical or whatever belief system. They have no conscience or heart. um...I'm talking about the Taliban here but you could use the same wording for liberals if you like. ;o)

The Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego is modular. You know how they have a naval base in that area? Well in order to get those large carriers out, they have to shut down traffic and dismantle the bridge. It essentially floats, so they can just disconnect a piece or two, tow them out of the way, and let the ship out. Float them back in, reconnect, and let traffic across once more.

That's bull. The carriers **NEVER** pass under the bridge. They dock at North Island--as do the LPH's--well short of the bridge.

Well, tecnically in is the SECOND busiest in the worlld, but I agree with your point 100%. The Bay Bridge is the workhorse of the area, and it would seriously hurt the economy.

I happened to be watching the Learning Channel last night, and coincidentally, they were doing a special on bridges. The George Washington bridge in New York has two decks of 6 lanes, and carries an average of 300,000 cars per day. The Bay Bridge has two decks of five lanes, and carries an average of 290,000 per day.

In fact, there are two Navy bases that would be affected by a collapse of the Coronado Bridge. The first would be 32nd Street N.A.S., which is the home for Amphibious Group 3 (lots of ships, including U.S.S. Tarawa (LHA-1) on which I have proudly served). The other is the Amphib training base across the channel, near the Hotel Del Coronado.

On the other hand, there would be at least two Navy bases in San Diego Bay not affected: North Island N.A.S. (where the full-sized nuclear carriers moor), and the Point Loma sub base.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but isn't the Coronado Bridge at least a mile long? Are we assuming a total collapse of the bridge? One of these bridges is a huge target. IMO, a terrorist attack would be highly successful if it took out one small section. Looks to me like there'd be plenty of room for ships to go under, even in a worst-case scenario.

Right on all points, except, it's 32nd Street Naval Station, not NAS. So you're gator Navy huh? I was on the New Orleans (LPH-11). Got word the other day they are going to tow her from central California somewhere to Long Beach, next to the Queen Mary, as a museum.

You are right, but it would disrupt a lot of cross bay transportation. If the west span went down, the waterway between YBI and SF would be closed. This means that the Oakland port, which is the Bay Area's biggest, would effectively be closed.

The BART transbay tube would be closed to check for structural damage from a massive object of the bridge's size collapsing.

Most Ferry traffic has to go under the bridge to get to the East Bay (Jack London Square, Alameda). I don't think that ferrys can go under the east span. The only place the ferry could go would be Vallejo.

Not to mention the thousands of people who live on Treasure Island.

I recall a news item last year that the sub pens here in San Diego are empty and unused.

Which terrorists did Grayout mean, the enviro-wackos or Bin-Laden's group?

Actually San Pedro is not an incorporated city.

Thanks. I definitely didn't know that, although I should have, because I know LA is full of neighborhoods that have distinct names but are actually part of the city (e.g., Canoga Park).

The only thing I can remember from the San Pedro area from my time in LA was when two young Japanese nationals were murdered in a supermarket parking lot, with huge media attention following. I assume that the entire harbor area is not that dangerous a place to be.
