Just Received Computer Attack (Hacker Port Scan)
me ^

Posted on 10/21/2001 1:34:20 AM PDT by Bobby777

my firewall intercepted, recorded and blocked ... did traceroute on attacker ... it was right after I logged on to FR ... about 1/2 hour ago ... attacker's IP address was 206.61.145.6 ... saved traceroute ping ... guess I'll hand it over to the FBI if something serious happens ... heads up FReepers ...

Argh, did I ramble there or what!

My point (that I seemed to dance around) is that yes, it is possible to have a probe come from a third party as a direct result of merely looking at a thread on FR. And the unpleasant reality is that, thanks to the relatively nontrivial effort required to produce that effect, it's very likely (IOW "probable") that the party engaging in the practice is doing so with a malicious intent.

Moral of the story is to download zone alarm and install it! And if you're running XP, which I do not believe zone alarm supports as of yet, dig your way into the networking management and set up the built-in firewall. It's not as pretty as zone alarm, and not as configureable, but it will keep the wolf from busting through the door. (And if you're running a Mac, I don't know of any firewalls, so my "standard solution" applies: get a computer. :))

thanks for info ... firewall reported "port scan attack" ... pings seem to be as TCP's ... those run aplenty all the time ... never had one reported as "port scan" ...

I would not have uninstalled that if I were you...Black Ice detects AOL trying to access your system and scan it. It works great when they try to snoop into my system and see what I've got on my hard drive. If you still have it, install it and download the free upgrade, it's worth it.

it's also possible your internet browser is cleaning up its cache ... this happens when a certain threshold is reached ... and it runs for a little bit ... sometimes a minute or two of real HD activity ... FWIW ...

This has been a nice educational discussion. I'm outta here to go sell my junk stuff on ebay. I have some Tom Clancy at a great price. </shameless plug>

Thanks for the input; I *knew* (most of) the snooping being done was *by* AOL.
My solution was a simple one; I terminated AOL.

Besides, with the firewall *up*?
AOL wouldn't permit me to sign-on unless I first turned the thing off, then back on once online & so on.
...really, a PITA.

But again, AOL is history & I'll be going to the ZoneAlarm site to look at their product later today.

They say the first word sent over the the Internet was: Hello.
I'm willing to bet the second message was a flame
and the third message was a spelling correction.

I am so sick of hysteria mongers. You don't know your nose from a toothpick, and you are wasting bandwidth.

Why don't you actually find out a little bit about TCP/IP before you start acting like you know something? And why don't you save the bandwidth for something more than the random firing of your tiny little synapses?

Why don't you look around for some white powder and you can make another vanity post that you just found some anthrax?

For Christ sakes, your computer gets pinged all the time and most of them are from your own ISP or from the stuff on pages you open (Bizrate, DoubleClick). You do not need to turn in this junk to the FBI or anybody it is perfectly normal. Additionally, the types of hacks that they are talking about will be directed toward servers. Your home computer, no matter what type of operating system you are running, will not be a target as denying you access to this or any other website is not going to accomplish anything. If you want to find out how to know when you are being attacked for real go to this site and read it. Just do not be jumpy over firewall hits, even the one that comes from China is a legitimate business. http://www.robertgraham.com/pubs/firewall-seen.html
