me ^
Posted on 10/21/2001 1:34:20 AM PDT by Bobby777
my firewall intercepted, recorded and blocked ... did traceroute on attacker ... it was right after I logged on to FR ... about 1/2 hour ago ... attacker's IP address was 206.61.145.6 ... saved traceroute ping ... guess I'll hand it over to the FBI if something serious happens ... heads up FReepers ...

Whaddaya mean? My ZoneAlarm firewall blocks about 45 of those a day!
It allows me to do an ID check, and they've all been the usual pings from worldwide communications companies.

Don't bother it happens 700 times per day or more if your logged on to the internet. Hackers scan ranges of numbers across the internet. Some newbies scan from 000.000.000 to 999.999.999 . For people that don't know the IP number its the number your isp gives you when you logon to the internet if you use a cable modem or broadband sometimes they give you the same number all the time. Its the real internet for example freerepublic.com is not really the address for this site its just a number given to it by a isp freerepublic is a name binded to it to make it easy to use.
I have gotten port-scanned 1000 times or more per day as long as you do not have a program someone installed on your computer its not something to worry about or even care about.

sorry ... this was the first actual "port scan" alert I've received ... it always blocks incoming/outgoing TCP's as default ... those I get 100's of per day ... this was a first (for me) ... cool ... thanks for the info ...

A ping is the networking world equivalent of a knock on the door - one device looking to see if there's something there on a particular IP address.

What a sub 7 does....knocks on doors

Why? Some companies are checking for their own subscribers' traffic. Others may be looking for a certain pattern of site usage (some of these companies are hired by your favorite Internet addys to do just that). It's a lot like the way you get on junk mailing lists.

"OK guys ... read your messages ... educate me ... why does a telecom ping my computer ports? what is it that it does?"I'd like to know about this, too.
I can hear my HD grinding away periodically; and of late, a lot more than usual.
When I had AOL, I tried the freeware firewall, "Black Ice" (I think it was called...).
But it interferred with AOL so bad I had to uninstall.
Now I've a cable modem & am wondering if trying BI or another type would be OK because there's some weird crap going on.
~Like right *now*, for example.

go with ZoneAlarm free or upgrade ... search Google.Com for URL unless somebody posts ... or McAfee Firewall ... these seem to get the best reviews ... (BlackIce doesn't block outgoing from what I read on FR ... I'm sure someone else will comment too ...) ... you can download ZA for free ...
