Four more students suspended for wearing Confederate flags

MOULTON, Ala. (AP) -- Four more students were suspended Wednesday from two Lawrence County schools for defying dress codes by wearing Confederate flags on their clothing.

The suspensions came as 15 other students at Lawrence County High School in northwest Alabama finished three-day suspensions imposed Monday when they showed up with Confederate flag clothing in defiance of a rule instituted by Principal Ricky Nichols on Friday.

One student at Lawrence County High School was given a three-day suspension for defying the rule, Nichols said. At Speake School, a third-grader, fifth-grader and eighth-grader were sent home for one-day suspensions Wednesday for wearing T-shirts with rebel flags, Principal Earl Leonard said.

Leonard said the students got opportunities to change into other T-shirts or turn theirs inside out. He said their parents chose to take the children home.

Nichols, in his first year at Lawrence County High School, said that since the fall term began he has been reassuring minority students and parents that there was nothing to fear from children wearing clothes with depictions of Confederate flags.

But Nichols instituted the new rule after racial slurs were used in two incidents last week.

Suspended Lawrence County High School students and parents said the shirts are a display of Southern heritage and had nothing to do with race.

Oh, dear friend, don't you know Diversity is a farce? It's racism backwards - the new affirmative action!

Most folks neglect the fact the South has a very, very diverse heritage - black, white, english, scottish, irish, spanish, south american, french, jewish, christian, native american. So many of these things make us Southern.

So when you see St. Andrew's Cross, think about all the different things that make the South so great. I commend these kids for standing up for their rights, their heritage, and their ancestors. I don't know where we got so far off track! [><]

AMEN! Our Southern boys and girls have always been among the first to serve in our armed forces. They are and will be doing the same in our present conflict. The least we can do for those brave Americans is to refrain from depriving them of one enduring symbol and reminder of home: the Southern Cross.

DEO VINDICE and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I am not attacking Southerners, I know many people from the South and they are great folks.
Nor am I challenging their loyaty to the US.
I have not studied the history of the Confederate flag as to what American battles or wars it has flown in.
I don't have all the facts, but I do know that the Confederate flag was commisioned by a seperatist regime whose intentions were to annex the Southern half of this country and form a new republic. This action to devide the Union of States was a violation of the US constition and was viewed by Licoln as a threat to the overall survival of this country.
I also know that when Fort Sumtner was overun by Confederate soldiers the US flag was taken down and replaced with the Confederate flag.
This act identified the Confederate flag as the banner of the seperatist movement and therefore was viewed by the Washington D.C. as the flag of the enemy.
Some people view the flag as offensive. If the Government by law forces young people to attend school, then that same government is obligated to protect them from being harrassed or offended.

God bless this Country, the North and the South

P.S.....I know some of you do not agree with me but thats OK, In all my life I have not ever come across any two people who see eye to eye on everything. If you feel you must then Flame Away

And the fight goes on. Could you point out to me exactly, and not using the Whiskey Rebellion Act(of which so many northern sympathizers bow and worship), where exactly it is in the Constitution of the United StateS that secession is illegal?

And while you're at it, while you're explaining that, please point out where the Constitution gave the Tyrant powers such as raising and building the navy, grand theft of money from the US Treasury, and declaring war without Congressional approval

If these kids had showed up wearing a picture of Osama.... I guess they'd been given a gold star that day, huh?

Just what I was thinking.

I agree with the harrassed part. As far as government protecting people from being offended goes that is just plain wrong. What about people who are offended by banning Confederate flags, do they have rights?

People do not have a right not to be offended, and the ones offended by a Confederate flag will just find something else to be offended by in its absence.

Nichols, in his first year at Lawrence County High School, said that since the fall term began he has been reassuring minority students and parents that there was nothing to fear from children wearing clothes with depictions of Confederate flags.

I admit I haven't been following this story closely, so maybe this has already been answered, but really: Who is this idiot, Nichols?

He thinks he has to "reassure" minority students and parents that there is nothing to fear....from clothing?? I guess this implies that those minority students and parents are afraid of certain types of clothing, at least in Nichols' mind. Sounds pretty condescending and insulting to me, but what do I know.
