Is Windows XP still on track for release?
Posted on 10/16/2001 7:43:02 PM PDT by operation clinton cleanup
Sorr, this is a business/vanity. Is XP still going to be released this month? I have used the beta version (build 2526)since August and am pretty happy with it.
Questions: Will XP be an update version of 98? Can I buy un update version of Win 2000 from 98? As you can see, I would rather pay 99.00 for an update rather than 400.00 for a full version. Any comments?

I don't think you can get Win2000 for under $100. I just ordered the Win2000Pro upgrade CD from the university where I teach and it still cost $125 even with the deep educational discount.

Thanks for the BTTT, but what does that mean? I'm new to this whole Freepin' thing!

Bump To The Top
You do it when a thread dies a gentle death and you want to revive it. The BTTT wasn't really for you, it was to "save the thread", but you are certainly welcome anyway!!

XP is not an update of '98. Instead, it is completely new. I've been using it for about five months now, and find it very stable. Similar to 2000 (in fact, XP seems to be compatable with most 2000 drivers). Overall, I like it. Haven't seen the BSOD in quite a while.
Re: purchase. My understanding is that beta users have to upgrade to XP Professional, which is $199, rather than the home version at $99.

Maybe I should start a new thread called "Bill Gates Sucks"?

Thank you booty, some news I can use!

You can update from 98 to 2000. The draw back is that if for some reason you have to reinstall you'll need to put '98 on there first if you don't spend the extra and get the 'full' edition. Not quite - if you have a Win2000 update package and re-install, all you have to do is pop in a Win98 CD in part of the install process - you don't have to fully install Win98 before re-installing 2000.

Thanks, Keith.
I guess the 64K dollar question is, does win2k have all the ties to microsoft XP does?, as far as media restrictions.

Thanks. Seems I was misinformed; I wish I'd known that was all I needed to do. Oh well.

You should be able to get a full OEM version of Windows 2000 off of eBay for less than $150. Buy the best you can, and cry only once. If you are using 98 now, you will be amazed at 2000, and more than happy about spending the extra $50.

yes, there is a crack for the "problem"

XP will be a huge success. I'm going to get it as soon as I can so I can develop in VB.net. (Can't do that with Win98)
