Sunday, October 14, 2001 -- St. Joseph's Cathedral (San Diego, CA)
I was on vacation and stopped in for the 6:30pm Mass in downtown San Diego. Father Manuel Guillen began his Homily by stating that the United States has done some awful things and we all need to repent. He went on to suggest that the bombing of Afghanistan was pointless and wrong. He then started attacking the food drop program. He made the CNN/Lib claim that it was a waste, that the refugees were burning the food. He also said he didn't blame them, after all, if someone who was bombing his country he wouldn't trust the food they gave him either. He did praise the President for starting the $1.00 children's fund, but the rest was a rant against America. NOT ONCE did he mention our troops or their families. Being that San Diego has a large military community, I was appalled at his lack of sensitivity. I can understand a priest supporting peace, but to not once pray for our servicemen was a disgrace. I called the Cathedral to voice my concerns to the Bishop and to Father Guillen, but I still haven't heard back.
I would appreciate it if any Catholic or San Diego freepers would help me out and call the church to ask that Father Guillen apologize at mass next Sunday to the men and women of our armed forces.
Here is a number that you can leave a message at:

I am a minister and a chaplain to those behind bars as well as my other law inforcement duties. I also minister in churches and on the radio as well. It is most inportant to use the pulpit to proclaim the gospel of Christ not as a place to spew out such degrating things about our great country which by the way is in most part a Christian nation. This man is using and abusing his calling to speak hatred of our country which God gave us so we could be free. God gave us a wonderful gift, its call free will and this nation is a manifestation of that gift. Sure we have our problems and some things like abortion, the promotion of homosexuality etc. are wrong but all in all we have the greatest nation in the world. We have a God given right to defend our country and not degrate her. I too will write this so called priest and give a call as well to voice my opinion. I will also pray for this man that God will bring him back in line and use the pulpit for one thing to proclaim the gospel.

He should endorse his feelings by going over to the Taliban and trying to convert some of the Muslims to his particular philosophy and ideas on religion. Wouldn't take long to find out that they are also capable of committing some pretty serious offenses such as executing a non-believer.

How much control does the central Roman church have over these loose cannons? It isn't like the Pope can just boot this guy out, is it?

Bump for a morning phone call.

I heard on a Houston radio station that the Pope of the Vatican feels the American's are doing the right thing going after terroism. The Pope lived through WWII and realized that it was NECESSARY to fight back evil. This San Diego Priest needs to have a heart to heart with the Pope. You never remain neutral and embrace evil.

It isn't like the Pope can just boot this guy out, is it? Theoretically, he could. In practice, it's the Bishop's job to keep this jerk under control. I don't know if the Bishop in San Diego has a spine. Some do, some make jellyfish look positively adamantine.

Guillen is a well-known Mexican surname. Get it?

FYI: The Bishop of San Diego is Gilbert E. Chavez
Thanks for your help everyone!

I'm very offended by semi-Commie priests flapping their lips about politics as part of their so-called homilies. (BTW, I'm a practising Catholic).
When the misguided padre shoots off his mouth like that, he's stepping out of his role as priest and becomes just another blowhard with a captive audience.
It's a good thing this didn't happen in our parish--I know Hubby would have stood up right there in mass and told the padre to KNOCK IT OFF.

Why didn't you stand up and walk out?
These left-wing priests count on sheep-like behavior.
Give 'em a little rebellion!
