Sunday, October 14, 2001 -- St. Joseph's Cathedral (San Diego, CA)
I was on vacation and stopped in for the 6:30pm Mass in downtown San Diego. Father Manuel Guillen began his Homily by stating that the United States has done some awful things and we all need to repent. He went on to suggest that the bombing of Afghanistan was pointless and wrong. He then started attacking the food drop program. He made the CNN/Lib claim that it was a waste, that the refugees were burning the food. He also said he didn't blame them, after all, if someone who was bombing his country he wouldn't trust the food they gave him either. He did praise the President for starting the $1.00 children's fund, but the rest was a rant against America. NOT ONCE did he mention our troops or their families. Being that San Diego has a large military community, I was appalled at his lack of sensitivity. I can understand a priest supporting peace, but to not once pray for our servicemen was a disgrace. I called the Cathedral to voice my concerns to the Bishop and to Father Guillen, but I still haven't heard back.
I would appreciate it if any Catholic or San Diego freepers would help me out and call the church to ask that Father Guillen apologize at mass next Sunday to the men and women of our armed forces.
Here is a number that you can leave a message at:

At some point I await the announcement that organized Christianity and Communism have completely merged. Till then my main complaint about these Commies who work in/through organized religion are phonies and not revealing their true aims.
At least actual Communists are honest about what they represent.

oops..
Should read "my main complaint about these Commies who work in/through organized religion is that they are phonies..."

It doesn't sound like the jerk ever mentioned the wonderful Gospel of this past Sunday--the ten lepers who were cured and only a Samaritan returned to thank Jesus.
If it had been me, I would have stood and challenged him. Really.
These clowns who use their time in the pulpit to bash the country they live in are insulting their congregations, and I'd make damn sure they knew I didn't appreciate it.

Don't let this one bad apple spoil the whole bunch. There are many good churches and priests out there. That's why when you come across a bad one, it's important to call them on it.

Good Grief, and San Diego is a military town.
The military is remembered in the Prayers of the Faithful, and at the end of Mass in my Parish, Our Lady of the Atonement in San Antonio. Here's one of the prayers we say at the end of Mass
For those who serve in the Armed Forces.
O Lord God of Hosts, stretch forth, we pray thee, thine almighty arm to strengthen and protect those who serve our country. Support them in the day of battle, and in the time of peace keep them safe from all evil; endue them with courage and loyalty; and grant that in all things they may serve without reproach; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Looking back on it, I really wish I would have. Since I've never heard this priest speak before, I kept giving him the benefit of the doubt. At one point when we were making petitions, I said rather loudly that we should pray for our servicemen who are pointing their lives on the line for our country. I got a grateful and knowing nod from a young serviceman sitting in front of me. That wasn't enough, but at least I let one of our guys know that not all of us was buying into that BS.

At least actual Communists are honest about what they represent. And they refer to the attacks on the US as terrorism,
which is more than Reuters will do.

Thanks, I'll include that in my letter to the Bishop. If anyone else would prefer to write a letter, the address is:
St. Joseph's Cathedral

Thank You...I prefer the bishop...let the people in his parish tell him what we tell our priest when he says something stupid...."we will go to the neighboring parish and give them our money!"

Another wet back (illegal?) finds a way to trash America!

I thought the homily had to be centered around the gospel of the day unless you get permission from the Bishop. What's very unfair is for this priest to use the occasion of the Mass and the Gospel to give his personal opinion to a captive audience.

I was surprisingly pleased with some of the sermons from my Catholic Church. The pastor called for justice and another priest commented that the attack was "By evil people of a twisted religion".

This is why the pope has ordered priests not to get involved in politics. Next time get up in Church and tell him to shut up.

TROLL TOWN!

Can't we drop good father Guillen by parachute into Afghanistan? They need his lovin' more than we do.
And I'm sure they'll appreciate his concern.
