Do you remember Freepin in 1998?

I first found Free Republic through Drudge Report. I found Drudge by listening to the White House briefing sessions who constantly told everyone how radical he was. (I knew he was my kind of people.)
To get to my point, or to make a short story long, Does anyone else remember freepin back then?
There were days you couldn't get on. When you did get on, it took forever to load the posts. There were three options. Next 10 - 50 -100 and a simple search engine. Remember the posts that said "Please don't post graphics, I can't read the posts if you do."?
Don't get me wrong, many of the improvements that have been made, are because the technology has changed. I also got a faster modem and new computer and learned how to use them.
I Would set my alarm for 5:00 am to get on while it wasn't busy. At first, I didn't post, there were self appointed post police that would tear you a new one, if you didn't hold your mouth just right. But finally, I thought, what the heck, they can't see me, they don't know me, I can take it.
Here I am ramblin on - what I wanted to do is say a great big thanks to John for the newest improvements.
Thanks John!!!
P.S.
When is it going to make my coffee in the morning?

I started with WhiteWater. It was the only way to get info from work. I regularly surfed the US vs Clinton Thread that sprang from the Whitewater Hearings....and it is still carring on as the "America the right way" Thread. Those were some good times!

There are two FReepers from '98,'99, that I have been curious about, especially since the events of Sept. 11: Jai and Moshe. Does anyone remember these two? Jai was bent on some crack-pot Iraq Monkey Trap theory, and Moshe was bent on all crack-pot theories. They seemed harmless enough then, but there is something that makes me recall their names.

I found freerepublic through drudge... Like others it was the Whitewater file. That was in 97 , I finally got the nerve to register in early 98

The poster now known as RepublicanWildcat got me hooked by sending me link after link. I just got drawn in, and haven't escaped since mid-late 98.
Thanks for the encouraging words! "Most" is good.

How is Petunia?Poor thing...ever since the girls turned the saloon into a fern bar she's had to work the docks and things are really poor this year what with the fleet all over there at the tally rally.

That's a cool trick. Thanks! BTW, I just discovered it also works just by right-clicking on your name wherever it appears in Free Republic (and then selecting Properties).

I remember there used to be peer pressure to spell correctly. I miss that.

Aye! I preferred the pirate motif!

yep. Had a different screen name back then, but I think the conversations have gotten better. There are more hot debates with many people getting an education.

I'm glad I was able to entice a few Prodigy members into coming over here! Once I saw what Jim Robinson had done here, there was no going back to Prodigy. If Freepers think the moderators are bad here, they should have been around for the Prodigy days. Those Prodigy hallway monitors were yanking threads left and right. We had ways to circumvent them however. Remember when they disallowed the posting of newspaper articles? That only lasted a day or two. We got around that by posting them with no bylines, as though we were writing them ourselves as opinion! Prodigy realized that they were really setting themselves up for a lawsuit then so they had to start allowing it again.

When someone posted a picture, it tied the machine up for half an hour and made you say AAARGH!Yeah, but at least I got some work done. I would click on the thread to open it, then go wash dishes, do laundry, etc. When I finished some work the thread would be finished loading. Now with a better computer, ADSL connection, and the new improved FR, I can't get any work done.

"I had to bully my way onto the Island to save Petunia from the It takes the Village People Cannibis/Canofbull/Cannibulls who were going to BBQ her." But you did it with such savoir-faire, harrowup!
The Saloon wouldn't have been the same without your wonderfully civil jousting, taking the discourse to higher and higher levels of polite disagreements!
You honed our skills, and we took on any FLAMING threads, extinguishling them with our
Call To Arms and Intervention..:)))
'Twas a noble cause, enjoyed by all.

Yes, there were times when it seemed half the postings were about the censorship. With the old slow connections it was a real time-waster. BTW, do you know what happened to Karen Bixman? The last I heard (several years ago) she was very ill in the hospital.
