(Bill) Clinton urges end to global inequalities after war

PRAGUE, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said on Monday the United States and its allies had to win the war against terrorism but in the long run the West also had to bring an end to global inequalities.

Speaking at a human rights conference in the Czech capital, Clinton repeated his support for his successor George W. Bush, and the action taken following last month's suicide attacks on the United States.

"At the moment we have to win the fight we are in, but over the long run we have to spread the benefits and shrink the burdens of this new age," he said.

"We have to get people in the developing world to turn away from primitive hatreds, we have to get people in the developed world to turn away from short-sighted selfishness," he said.

He said global inequalities fuelled violence and the United States and other wealthy countries had to do more to combat poverty, AIDS and environmental issues such as global warming.

Bush in March pulled out of the 1997 Kyoto treaty on climate change, saying the deal, signed by Clinton, would harm the U.S. eocnomy.

By withdrawing from the accord, Bush removed the world's biggest economy and the emitter of one quarter of the globe's man-made greenhouse gases, from a system based on countries of the world acting in concert.

I think the US has more than done its share in third world countries to help out. I get sick of this socialist bullcrap. Most people are rich because they work hard to get there. They provide the jobs we need to feed our own families. Socialists want to spread the wealth? Then stop giving third world governments our money and work with the long-term mission groups that are in these countries. At least the money will go to the people in those countries who need it the most, not to the dictators and leaders.

When Bill and Hillary take an oath of poverty to truly "serve" the under-developed nations, I might take him seriously. Meanwhile, they are in NO position to tell the generous middle-class to not be short-sighted and selfish. I believe he's so arrogant that he fails to see the hiprocracy in his comment. How many millions in book deals, guest speeches, library funds, re-election campaigns? It's scary to have Hillary as a New York senator when we need to send the state sooo much money. You can bet she'll find a way to funnel some of the cash to benefit her... in some way.

The GOP would be smart if they make it a part of their next presidential campaign to promise a push for global democracy. Cut off aid to despotic dictators, brutal "monarchies" like Saudi Arabia and UAE ect. We don't have to go to war to end these tyrranical leaders but we don't have to help them either. Time for a national energy policy that aces the Arabs out and a foreign policy that promotes democracy rather then domestic profit. Had this been our policy over the last 50 years (cold war was anti-commie, not pro-democratic) we would have never have had to go to Korea, Vietnam, Panaman and the Persian Gulf, nor would we have been attacked on Sept 11 (I'm not blaming the victim, I'm proposng a program to make sure that the number of victims declines).
