And its not even halloween yet :)

News is claiming weather related, we have had a lot of rain today, but no lightning thunder or heavy winds. Has anyone else in Chicago area heard more about this?

Some people reported a funnel cloud; a security guard at the JC Penney's there said he thought it was micro burst (whatever that is). The security guard said that evryone automatically yelled "Bomb" but that it was most likely weather. I live in the area (about 5 miles west of the mall) and the storms have been very heavy.

The roof was built by union labor.

Windows and headlights could be caused by shockwaves from an explosive, or a massive change in air pressure, like a funnel cloud.

Northwest suburban chicago. Near Skokie, which has a lot of Jewish residents. It might even be in Skokie but there's so many suburban villages I lose track.

I live about a mile from the Golf Mill Mall, It was either a tornado or Microburst. It hit here at 4:45 pm. Streets are all flooded.

it is in Niles, northwest of downtown Chicago. I just returned from dropping my son off downtown and the rain and wind were so strong that my wipers barely cleared my windshield. I exited the Kennedy at Washington and went through a HUGE amount of water -- I expect there will be flooding and some expressways may close. Upon my return, my own backyard was almost totally flooded, which never happens.

high winds were reported in that area

they must have been very localized, Golf Mills is in Niles, IL not that far from ohare airport.

Weather stats from www.acuweather.com show the highest winds reported at ohare this afternoon was 10 mph.

micro burst (whatever that is).

Sudden down rush of unstable air. Winds in excess of 60 mph. Short but violent.

No doubt the work of you know who ;)

must have been a microburst, looking at radar and weather stats, it does not look like a tornado.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL

557 PM CDT SAT OCT 13 2001

STRONG WINDS HAVE BEEN MOVING THROUGH NORTHEAST ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA THIS EVENING.

THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF WIND DAMAGE ACROSS PART OF NORTHEAST ILLINOIS. THE STRONG WIND GUSTS OF UP TO 50 MPH ARE A RESULT OF A STRONG COLD FRONT MOVING THROUGH THE AREA. THE WINDS ABOVE TWO THOUSAND FEET ABOVE THE GROUND ARE ABOVE 50 TO 55 MPH. IN A SHOWER OF HEAVY RAIN...THE DOWNDRAFTS INDUCED BY FALLING RAIN WOULD BRING THE STRONG WINDS TO THE GROUND. THIS WOULD PRODUCE BRIEF GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 50 MPH.

AS THE FRONT MOVES EAST THE SUSTAINED WINDS WILL BE FROM THE WEST AND INCREASE IN SPEED LATER TONIGHT.

Microburst are very localized, and I for one, have never heard of one that took out a building. They usually affect planes on landing. How widespread was the window and headlight damage? Sounds to me like a funnel touched down and went back up maybe.

Has anyone else in Chicago area heard more about this?

Matter of fact for one hour I've tried every local news source on nada but we did hear this on the 6pm news (ABC)

Initially they 'thought' it was due to the microbursts from serious storms.

But microbursts do not bring a gasoline smell nor descriptions of an explosion that blew out skylights, not the roof collapsing from rain or wind. Also eyewitnesses reported their car windows and taillights blown out!So is it the weather, I was just there yesterday, glad it wasn't today! Btw no injuries reported but about 80 emergency vehicles responding and cordoning the mall off.
