Sen. John Edwards: Intelligence Expert? Thread II on Edwards-NOT a moderate
FoxNews,MSNBC, various | Oct. 8, 2001 | Me + various

Posted on 10/08/2001 9:18:58 AM PDT by Ragtime Cowgirl

In a time when we need to pull together as a nation, Democrats offer up one of their most divisive Senators, a man with no military background, a medical malpractice lawyer 'til his '98 Senate run, as an intelligence expert. O'Reilly and Russert both featured Sen. John Edwards yesterday and refered to him as an intelligence expert. On Sept. 11th I found a ray of hope in the thought that this ambulance chaser was now sidelined while the country dealt with reality. That his black vs. white, seniors vs. young, rich vs. poor, evil Big Business vs. workers, polluters vs. envirals, the little people vs. the Powerful, divisive, divisive, divisive repetitive MO would no longer play in an America uniting against the terrorists. There is nothing moderate about this leftist darling of the media, Trail Lawyers, Sierra Club, NEA, Planned Parenthood, socialists.

Sen. John Edwards, "It's War." Thread 1

Making the Law Work for Ordinary People
From Sen. Edward's speech to law students at Drake University, March 31, 2001.

"Senator John McCain and I have worked for months on a Patient's Bill of Rights. A law that would empower children like Ethan Bederick1 and like the Bederick family, people like you, give you more control over your own health care. That's what this is, that's what it's all about. And the only people on the other side are the big HMOs and the insurance companies. And it's a war. It's a war. On one side, you've got what the American people want, what they deserve, and what they need. And on the other side, you've got the big HMOs and insurance companies.

Exactly the same thing is happening with campaign finance. Exactly the same thing. Because what we're about is trying to return power in this government, in this democracy, to you. That's where it's supposed to be. Our government is not supposed to be bought,3 our politicians are not suppose to get these huge campaign contributions. That's not the way our country works. We're in a war, because these types will fight, with every bit of their being and all of their resources, to make sure that they maintain that power that they now have. This is the battle that we have. This is the fight that we have to take on."

...."There were a lot of people in Washington who were not civil, who were extraordinarily partisan, who were partisan for the sake of being partisan. And I though something needed to be done about that. And we actually did some things. We formed a Centrist Coalition in the Senate to work together."
"I didn't go to Washington to go up there and schmooze the people...). But I went there to fight for the people who sent me there6....because without me, they've got nothing. They've got nothing."
"You know, most of the people in Iowa aren't a member of a special interest group.7 Most of the people in the state don't have a lobbyist in Washington. So who speaks for them? Who speaks for those people in North Carolina who I grew up with?

Those are the people we have a responsibility to, because the only hope they have, the only hope they have, is that the people they vote for - when they go in that voting booth and vote - the only hope they have, is that the people they vote for, the people who are elected, will go to Washington and ignore that stuff and fight for them. It's the only chance they've got."

John Edwards on "The Law"
"Now, we have many students here tonight who are going to be making decisions about what they do...And I would say a couple of things to you.

Number one: do everything in your power to use the law as the extraordinary, ennobling, enabling, powerful, and sometimes rectifying tool that it can be. You have the power to change people's lives, to effect their lives, in a positive way, in a positive way."

"But the thing you should never do, ever, is to underestimate the power of the law and the power that you have. Because remember, the law is nothing but words on a piece of paper. When we finish writing a law in Washington, it is words on a piece of paper. You give it life. You make it work. You make it change people's lives. It's a wonderful and extraordinary opportunity and never underestimate the power of the law, when in the hands of a courageous, principled advocate, to change things."
"I know that this law school has taught you to respect and revere the law as the sacred thing it is."
"I revere the law. I think it's a sacred thing. It is the great equalizer out there in the world. And it can do amazing things. It can do sweeping things. Such as provide health care for millions of senior citizens all over this country."
(The law) "It is the reason that the powerless in our country can take on the most powerful. It is the reason that regular people, regular people can be on equal footing with the most well-connected and powerful people in the world."
("And the people who send us to Washington)...They don't care about that crowd in Washington. What they care about is what are we doing for them. What are we doing for them? That's the reason we're there."
"There was a little girl in North Carolina named Valerie Lakey who suffered a terrible accident. Some of you may have heard about it. It was on the news. But she sat on a faulty swimming pool drain and literally had her intestines pulled out..

"And here we are again, here we are again. One little girl, one little family against a very
powerful company. But the most amazing thing happens when you walk into a courtroom..."

Emphasis on power, mine.

NOVAK: I was interested, Mark, that he absolutely said he is not a liberal, he's a centrist, but then he endorsed the entire Gore so- called populist program. So what -- the kind of programs that Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman referred to as liberal are now labeled as populist. Maybe there's been a change in labels and not in substance. Evans & Novak, CNN-8/26/00

John Edwards, the people's Senator or the liberal's Senator? Boone Report
Edwards rated one of most liberal Senators Link
National Federation of Independent Business rating:Senator Jesse Helms 100, Senator John Edwards Link

Edwards pro-abortion , including partial birth.
Supports: AmeriCorps , increase in minimum wage, NEA rating of 100%, pro-Test Ban Treaty, and Nat. End. Arts, voted against John Ashcroft and Gale Norton, for background checks at gun shows, gun locks, the Brady Bill and ban on "semiautomatics", against reforming government regulations on business. National Taxpayer's Union rates Edwards an "F", voted against the farmers at Klamath Falls, against the Boy Scouts, Edwards starts his own PAC, hypocrite, Aug. 20, 2001.

Remarks by Senator John Edwards NATIONAL BAPTIST CONGRESS of CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Charlotte, North Carolina Thursday, June 21, 2001:
"I believe that every child has worth and dignity in the eyes of God. I know that abiding faith in every soul is what guides the Baptist Convention. And it's what guides my work in the Congress. " (is pro partial birth abortion).
"Let me tell you: I'm outraged by what happened in Florida, particularly to African American voters. It was wrong – it was undemocratic – and we've got to see that it never, ever happens again. "
And I want to work with President Bush as well. But I'll be honest: I'm mighty concerned about his plans for the country. Instead of helping working families, he often sides with the powerful special interests.

In case he hasn't noticed, they don't need the help.

And so President Bush – and all of us – must choose. Will we stand for regular people, or will we allow the special interests to stand in their way?

Will we stand for patients and doctors, or HMO bureaucrats?

Will we stand for the rights of every single voter – or for those who don't mind if thousands, even millions of votes fall through the cracks?

Thank you, Howlin. I did a simple search last June, wondering why he was given so much free air time by the mainstream media. After a day of research it seemed necessary to keep a serious eye on this guy. He lies - bigtime, and the media once again is giving this major league leftist a pass and supporting his Mr. Moderate act. Edwards combines Bill Clinton's schmooze-ability with Hillary's political values.

The big not-so-secret love affair with the press and the Dem. party for Edwards began when he gave what's considered the most convincing speech against the impeachment of xxx42 behind closed doors in the Senate as a freshman. He sealed their affection with his unwavering support of Gore, defending Gore in his typically divisive way (think Hillary) when any scandals surfaced and ....Edwards tells U.S. News and World Report that he thinks former President Bill Clinton will soon retake the helm of the Democratic Party. Edwards does not think Gephardt or Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle have filled Clinton's shoes. Link and more at Thread 1.

I'll vote for the devil himself over Edwards. Klinton II.

Luckily, History is not on Johnny's side. The last person to go from Senate to President was JFK.

Watch Roy Barnes. He's the one to watch IMO.

I live in NC. Edwards ran on his looks, chrisma and money against old, tired and boring Lauch Faircloth. Faircloth never had a chance. Edwards ran as a very moderate democrat and presto chango trned into a flaming liberal as soon as elected. When reelection time comes, he will campaign as a moderate again. There is no doubt the dems have big plans for him, VP or maybe the Presidential nomination. Have you noticed all the bills with his name on them? There is a reason. Edwards will be formidable, he can really be tough and still smile. I hate to say it, but he will surely be reelected I doubt any serious challenge will be forth coming. The libs in Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte love this guy.

This is why Edwards isn't IMO the BIGGEST threat(YET)

Last Presidents.
00 - GWBush - Governor, TX
92 - Klinton - Gov, Arkansas
88 - GHWB - Reagan's VP
80 - Reagan, Gov, California
76 - Carter, Gov Georgia
74 - Ford, Appointed from VP
68 - Nixon, Eisenhower's VP
64 - LBJ , Incumbent Pres and VP
60 - JFK, Senator

The last to go from Senator to Pres was JFK. I expect someone to rist from the governor seats, epsecially from the South, and to a lesser extendt, the midwest.

However, Any Southern Democrat is a treat.

AARRRGGHHH! That was the whole reason Clinton got elected and stayed in office for 8 years! I wish women wouldn't use charisma as the litmus test for their heroes.

I completely agree with this. However, I am glad someone is aware of John Edward's charisma. We ignore that with our own peril. I think another reason Clinton was as successful as he was is that many of his critics completely ignored his abilities to charm people and thus grossly underestimated him. Let's not make the same mistake with Edwards.

I hope you're right. Preventive measures are called for, just in case. The Dems. are putting their money on him, that's obvious from his multiple Senate committee appointments, media support, his numerous fundraisers and campaigning efforts around the nation and even to Israel recently. He keeps claiming that he's a moderate, though his record proves the lie, and the public seems to be buying the act.

E-mail the whole Senate or House with one click

What about the decent folks across the state who were lied to during the campaign? Is there any way the NC press will write about Edward's record, how he is selling out business owners, how his own multi-million medical malpractice lawsuits helped drive up the cost of insurance and prescriptions for seniors, how his complete support of the NEA and the failing public school system hurts the children? Do the NC tobacco growers know that he accepted big campaign contributions from lawyers involved in the tobacco lawsuit, or the textile mill owners know that he's against any reforms of the costly federal regulations on business? Do the NC taxpayers know that he'd rated an "F" by the National Taxpayers Union for his tax and spend votes in the Senate? Think we can help share this info with the good people of NC in spite of the press?

Why not a real grassroots direct mail campaign, beginning now? Surely, most North Carolinians know that he's no "security expert," as he's being paraded out to be!

His views, as stated above, and as evidenced by his strong defense of the former criminal in the White House and endorsement of Gore's failed attempt to steal the White House, need to be on the radar of the citizens of NC now, so that they can contrast his future campaign stance with the reality of who he is!

He is of the Hunt/Clinton/Gore variety. Just look at the disgraceful state of affairs in the nation right now due to Clinton/Gore's neglect, and the terrible condition of the state budget in NC left by Hunt.

These bozos out promise the folks with their hands out and "out charm" airhead females in order to set themselves up as "experts" and power brokers.

Like Clinton, he is a nobody who got picked by some elite group of political hacks because they thought he was photogenic and could talk his way through, like Clinton.

Align yourself with NCFREE, with the home school group, with NFIB, and with Right to Life, and other groups opposed to the liberal agenda. If the Republicans are savvy, they will begin building the case against him now too!!!!

Yes! A grassroots effort may be more successful than any official campaign from the Republican party. The press will not support the Republican efforts, getting ad space would be a problem and coming from the people of NC, the Dems. wouldn't be able to holler party politics and blame the "mean-spirited" Republicans.

Follow the N.C.Insider coverage of the Faircloth/Edwards race. Edwards smooth lies and divisive rhetoric angered his opponent so much that in the end Edwards appeared a sweet and reasonable man next to a bitter rival.

NC residents can and should attack him on his voting record and hypocrisy. They had nothing to go on except his word during election '98, no previous political experience to expose his true agenda.

How to get the word to the people? The press will continue to portray him as a moderate and caring champion of the people. The NC Freepers have a tough job on their hands. Any e-mail addresses for local and state NC papers, organizations would be welcome for us out-of-staters who understand the importance of getting the truth out to the NC voters and exposing Edwards.

From time to time, over the next months, repeat your message containing the details of his record on this site and on other conservative sites, requesting NCarolinians and others to provide assistance. This needs to be an ongoing effort prior to the beginning of the next election cycle, or it will be too late.

From Thread I (and because FoxNews has the snake on again):

Winston-Salem Journal during the Dem. primary in NC: " Edwards is a charmer, who seems intent on winning votes but who seems glib discussing issues. ....", and Edwards stretches the truth in his ad campaign-Link, and here, and same old.

Edwards role during Clinton's impeachment trial (chosen by the Senate for lead role after publicly defending and attending fundraiser with Clinton during his campaign for Senate the previous year):Link, impeachment a "rocket launch" for Edwards political career, Edwards advising Arlen.

Claims he's pro-gun rights, BUT: voted for gun locks, supports the Brady Bill, ban on "semiautomatics", and background checks at gun shows.

John Edwards on Gore's "torte reform" call to Texas: "I don't think that memo means anything," Edwards said on Fox. "Al Gore isn't involved. He never made the call." Link (a porn site).

Sen. Edwards hosts fundraiser for Sen. Cantwell while pushing for Camp. Finance Reform, and here. Both Cantwell and Edwards campaigned on "not accepting PAC money."

Sponsors the "Patients Bill of Rights"..but on bills that could hurt his home state tobacco growers: "We don't need the federal government sticking its nose into that," and here, accepts donations from anti-tobacco trial lawyers.

Scalia Against Ergonomics Law

Democrats on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee appeared to be solidly against Scalia, who has criticized ergonomics and Clinton-era regulations as "quackery" and "junk science."

Scalia was pressed by Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., to admit he has represented just two workers in his 10-year labor law career, which has focused mostly on corporate clients.

Edwards said he questioned whether Scalia has the "necessary empathy for workers in order to adequately and properly represent them."

Edwards successes in his medical malpractice suits rely mainly on emotional manipulation of the jury, "quackery" and "junk science."
