WAYS TO ASSIST/SUPPORT HOMELAND DEFENSE
Many | 10/5/01 | A Navy Vet

Posted on 10/05/2001 1:11:23 PM PDT by A Navy Vet

September 11, 2001 changed the American way of life possibly forever. We are no longer protected by the vast expanses of ocean - the barbarians are within our own gates. We have been been given a very large, ugly dose of reality and find ourselves in an unfamiliar and vulnerable position. We find ourselves having to defend our families, homes, and freedom on our own soil.

Because of the events of 9/11, homeland security (civil defense) has now become our country's top priority. This thread is to provide a central location for opportunities to assist in our mutual defense. Feel free to post any public information that would support in this effort.

Although the creation of a new federal cabinet post and bureaucracy is a debatable action, please do not use this thread to argue the merits of that issue.

Excellent post...thanks for the bump.

Regarding the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Indeed, the CG is stretched very thin these days. The CG Auxiliary is an excellent way to assist them and be part of the action.

The CG Auxiliary has long been an intrumental arm of the CG and not just in coastal areas; their support is needed on the inland lakes and rivers as well.

Thanks for the ping, Vet. We on the homefront will also be responsible for watching out for the families of those who go over there to fight.

I am surprised that you left out the State Defence Forces (variously called State Guards, State Military Reserves, State Militias, etc.). These are organised in 28 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. They are officially part of the Organised Militia (as it is termed in Maryland, my state), but have no Federal duties or responsibilities, and receive no Federal funds, unlike the National Guard. Some states maintain only small cadres in their Defense Forces, others have large and active organizations. You should inquire if your state has a DF, and if so, how to join (usually, a parallel unit is maintained at each NG Armory). If your state does not have a Defense Force, contact your state legislators and demand that they organise one.

Didn't think of them. That's why I asked others to post their suggestions.

A Friday evening big Ranger bump.

Actually, for the last three or four weeks, A Navy Vet, Bob and I have been working on the FreeRepublic Network Military Assitance Project. ANV has done most of the work. We will be unveiling the details shortly on the forum.

Thanks for the bump babe....now I gotta get packing again. :(

Thanks for the great links, I remember when this type of action was called Civil Defense as you state.

I have some important purchases to make in the next few months, and am trying to see how I can utilize my boat as mentioned on a thread some weeks ago.

It's good you are back active again on this forum.

Update: I received a notice to come to the flotilla meeting Nov 6th.
Flotilla Commander still waiting for my "number"
Also Vets in Coos County OR forming a county wide Veteran Response Team,
that will give me a chance to get a detachment in Bandon set up.
Looks like I'll be training for radio watches and doing
search and rescue patrols on the ocean and rivers here.
Coast Guard really needs help in Oregon.

Yep, counts double if you hit a terrorist in the process, LOL
