Any advice for a knocked out tooth?
Posted on 10/04/2001 6:33:54 PM PDT by Thoeting
I would love to have the advice of anyone out there familiar with knocked out teeth. I am simply worried sick about my 14 year old daughter who knocked out a front tooth and damaged two others.
The tooth was out of her mouth for under 30 seconds and by accident I guess I was able to put it exactly in place. It was never moved after the accident, even by the dentist. The root was never touched in any way. We have an appointment with an endodontist on Monday, but as a mother, I would just like to sleep between then and now. She recently finished orthodontic treatment, so of course her smile is simply perfect (or was rather) We have seen a dentist who (under advice from an endodondist) put her retainer on her upper teeth. It is a fairly tight fit. She is on a liquid diet and is wearing the retainer 24/7.
Okay here are my questions
Is there any chance the tooth will reattach with its blood supply and remain in her mouth and just be okay?
Is there any chance that if she must have a root canal, we will not need to put crown on her front tooth.
Is there anything experimental out there at any hospital in the Washington DC that we can take her to
Anyone with advice or information would just be great!

Normally, I would tell you that you owed me a keyboard for spitting coffee on it. But at this hour, I'm going to have to tell you that I just spit beer all over my desk. LOL.

"I assume that you are one of the 2% who have given $$$ to maintain this place? If yes, I apologize, and carry on. If not, find a link and contribute. I have not seen you on the board until tonight."Don, I contribute to FreeRepublic (not as much as some, but what I can), and this post doesn't offend me. Thoeting has a real concern and the post was made under Miscellaneous. Lighten up.

Chill out...
It's apparent a large number of people here find this post an interesting diversion...Besides, if you find yourself needing answers to a pressing question, where best to solicit it, other than the board with the largest collection of life experience and education on the web?
In any event, I DO contribute to FR, and will continue to give to FR, largely because I do enjoy learning the things I do on these diversionary threads.
Even if Thoeting hasn't contributed to FR, consider this one on my dime.

They do AMAZING work with caps. I've had one for 20 years right in front with no problem and no one can tell. Yeah, the cap looks fine but that peanut that's been stuck between your front teeth for the last two weeks has got to go. ;o)

Don-O. I have no idea why this bugs you so much. This thread is up to 66 (most of them positive and informative) posts already and it seems many FR members are interested in this subject. The football thread you started drew a whole 5 posts.

I'm sorry that I did not see this post sooner. I am a retired dentist and have had a lot of experience with re- implanted teeth.
what you have described sounds as though you are probably in good shape with this for the time being and your appointment with an enodontist is great.
The young age of your daughter is favorable for the outlook here. If the tooth does not show any infection it may be fine at least in the short term. It will need a root canal filling which can be done after enough time for re-attachment of the periodontal membrane takes place.
For now just relax and take the advise of the Endodontist.
Good luck !!!

You should reaaly tell your daughter to listen next time!

LOL!!! It only took 70 replies to find someone who actually knows what they're talking about!

Knock the rest of them out with a baseball bat so it looks uniform.

Now it's worth every penny I've ever invested in FR, just to see how many others on this thread are telling you to go pound salt up your a$$.

"Even if Thoeting hasn't contributed to FR, consider this one on my dime."You go, joe! :) I'll even kick in an extra $5.00 next time to help defray the cost of this thread.

Hey Lee...how's things going?
Any news?
To: Thoeting
If young enough, may be able to move the other teeth to fill in via orthodontia (costs mega$$$, though). Best to try and save what's left attached, and get a cap.

This is one of the few time I've logged onto FR at night,
If don-o's "posting police" ("Book 'em, Don-O?") attitude is indicative of PM posters, I'll just post during the day.
Oh, and don-o: I do contribute to FR. I guess this cyber-ink just used up at least a good dollar of my last donation. It was WELL worth it.
To: Oldsailor
Thanks so much for your advice. I've taken in more information about avulsed teeth since Monday I ever thought I would ever in my life need to know via websites, dentist calls, and really every piece of information I can get my hands on about treatment options, prognosis, etc.
Thanks to everyone for adding to my trove of knowledge!
