Any advice for a knocked out tooth?
Posted on 10/04/2001 6:33:54 PM PDT by Thoeting
I would love to have the advice of anyone out there familiar with knocked out teeth. I am simply worried sick about my 14 year old daughter who knocked out a front tooth and damaged two others.
The tooth was out of her mouth for under 30 seconds and by accident I guess I was able to put it exactly in place. It was never moved after the accident, even by the dentist. The root was never touched in any way. We have an appointment with an endodontist on Monday, but as a mother, I would just like to sleep between then and now. She recently finished orthodontic treatment, so of course her smile is simply perfect (or was rather) We have seen a dentist who (under advice from an endodondist) put her retainer on her upper teeth. It is a fairly tight fit. She is on a liquid diet and is wearing the retainer 24/7.
Okay here are my questions
Is there any chance the tooth will reattach with its blood supply and remain in her mouth and just be okay?
Is there any chance that if she must have a root canal, we will not need to put crown on her front tooth.
Is there anything experimental out there at any hospital in the Washington DC that we can take her to
Anyone with advice or information would just be great!

Although it is best if you get advice from a pro first.

I would think that, since the nerve to the tooth is now severed, it will die. I'm not a doctor. What did the dentist tell you?

Your crazy glue comment is puerile. (Look it up).

She said to take her to an endodondist, which is scheduled for Monday. I'm just hoping to find some hope that my child won't have a gap for the rest of her life

They do AMAZING work with caps. I've had one for 20 years right in front with no problem and no one can tell.

Don't sweat it, caps can work better than the original some times. Cosmetically, she will be good as new.

Yeah, being gap-toothed is bad.
It killed the careers of Lauren Hutton and David Letterman....

Uh, can we possibly keep some focus here?
Sorry about your kid's tooth. I got kids as well.
But this ain't the dental board,

I am so sorry to hear of this -- and AFTER she went through(and you paid for!) the braces!! What a shame. I have heard that it is possible to save knocked out teeth; have you tried a Net search? There are some excellent dental sites that give graphic depictions of procedures, answer FAQs, etc. Some are quite detailed. Perhaps this can either ease your mind or allow you to at least know what to expect. Good luck with this.

My brother knocked out two front teeth on a steering wheel at age 16 (40 years ago). He wears a retainer with two teeth attached and the appearance is very natural. Whether her tooth can be saved, I don't know, but I expect there are some good options.
May God give you and your daughter peace as you wait.

From my experiences in the ER with this sort of thing, teeth that are re-inserted generally take root again and cause no trouble. In fact, of the half-dozen or so I saw, none of those teeth ever had to be pulled.
Antibiotics may be prescribed, but I doubt you'll have much trouble with this. :)

Me? I'd take my daughter to the nearest "good" emergency room right now. They have dentists and dental surgeons on call 24 hours a day.

I have seen people use crazy glue on their teeth. I have also seen them use it in place of butterfly band aids.It does work in many situations, mr. puerile
