Conservative columnist Ann Coulter, fired from her contributing editor perch at the National Review Online, blames it on free-speech hysteria in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. In a recent online column, Coulter opined that the United States should respond forcefully to the terrorist attacks: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity," she said. The comment provoked an uproar, and the National Review Online subsequently refused to run another Coulter piece in which she referred to "swarthy males." When Coulter complained, she was fired. Tuesday's Washington Post quotes Coulter as saying she doesn't need friends like that. "Every once in awhile they'll throw one of their people to the wolves to get good press in left-wing publications," she told the newspaper. National Review Online Editor Jonah Goldberg told the Post, "We didn't feel we wanted to be associated with the comments expressed in those two columns." Coulter told the Washington Post she's getting great publicity as a result of the flap.

"Personally, I thought Coulter's statements were a lot more offensive." And you probably don't even know what that says about you "Personally."

Doesn't anyone else but me see the "tongue in cheek" satirical nature of that comment? I see it. Anne, don't apologize. The wolves at Fox will understand.

" Many people believe in God, but not all of them are Christians."
But then they don't really believe in God, do they??? So, All of Judaism are Godless people? Does this mean Jesus was Godless? Help me here...

If you would clarify something for a misguided semi-defender: what precisely is the problem with advocating the conversion of Afghanis to one's own religion? It's not as though they even have the option right now.
I can't escape the feeling that Ann violated the basic taboo of American secularism: evangelizing bad, indifferentism good.

I love Jonah's writing but in this case, he took the cowardly way out. He should have stood by free speech like the left does. He could have disassociated himself from those remarks in Ann's column and that would have been the end of it.

Did I miss the link to the article? Or has it been take of NR already?

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity,"Doesn't anyone else think that this statement was hyperbole? When I first read it, I thought it was funny! I still do!

Since you have chosen to drag Israel into this thread and in response to your twisted reply to my original post, I ask you, how much does the Israeli Lobby pay you to post here?

God is a christian....now what Actually, Jesus was a Jew. Jews believe in God.
To: Dumb_Ox
The current freedom of Afghani Moslems is the freedom to live under a system of Islamic law which punishes conversion/"apostasy" with death. Exactly how free is that? The contrast is hardly so stark and clear. You can correct their system of government--as we should and will--without "converting them to Christianity".
My hope was that Anne Coulter would recognize the distatefulness of her statement and disavow what (understandable, forgivable) grief led her to say...but alas, great publicity is more important.

But then they don't really believe in God, do they??? So are you saying Jews don't believe in God? Who do you think THEY pray to? Remember now, Jesus was a Jew.

Nixon's dead. Viva Anne!! Anne don't apologize.

The first two comments are OK, but I'm sure a lot of people would have a problem with the last remark. Many people believe in God, but not all of them are Christians. I'm wondering exactly how one would use force to convert someone to Christianity. She doesn't seem to have a grasp on Christianity, or clear thinking in general.

"Does anyone actually picture Anne participating or supporting an organization dedicated to converting Muslims to Christianity. I don't." I'm with you , but the problem is that OWK and jess35 are so frightened by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that when they see the word Christian, all they can do is go into a rage, turn purple, and spam the thread until it chokes.

...
and convert them to Christianity," she said. What an asinine thing to say. Funny, I have this vague recollection that the quest for religious freedom drove many Europeans to colonize North America in the first place. Any chance the is out of context?
