I read about this a few months ago. This thing rocks, I think a weapon like this would make an excellent close range, last minute missle defense on ships. The downside is that once the barrel full of bullets is fired, you have to replace the whole barrel, so probably this would be relegated to static defenses somehow.

Sir, may I have one, Please?

Not that new, really. I heard about this almost a year ago.
All the same, I'd love to own one just to see the look on Janet Reno's or Sarah Brady's face!!

What's the point? An M61/A1 fires 6000 rounds a minute, can be reloaded in minutes, and doesn't require a barrel change for 60,000 rounds. This is a toy with no practical application.

I think there is something they aren't telling us about this. Moving roughly 160,000 #'s of ammo a minute requires a lot of energy, no matter how you do it. Think of it this way... 40 cars per minute.

"This means the gun would be worthless if it is taken from a policeman by an assailant."
Perhaps it's in the picture ... but the pistol grip is not really all that visible.
I'd like to see the training video, where the assailant wrestles this pop-gun from the hands of a policeman.
That would be two Dodge pickup trucks with payload cranes, "duking it out?"
Ducks Unlimited, call your office.

Can you imagine the recoil on this thing?!

Looks like it would be a great gun for hunting, and the season is just starting.
In Afghanistan that is.

By lashing together a series of rapid-fire barrels filled with mortars, and remotely controlling when and where they fire, this technology could be a replacement for landmines.

Yep, read about this awhile back (I think in Discover). Cool name "Metal Storm". I want some of these mounted on one of those UFO looking hovercraft so that our military could use them to go into canyons, etc. and stay safer. If you had them on the hovercraft, and it spun while firing them off, you'd have a "metal tornado".
Now that would take care of some of the terrorist camps (at least better that a 2 million dollar missile hitting a 10 dollar tent).

I wonder if someone with an electronic signal emitter could set this off from a distance. If we could, so could the enemy. Right?

A million rounds a minute? I need a faster reloading setup. Time to call Midway...

Just don't stand in front of this thing. I imagine it must eat up some barrels. Is this a one-time use thing? Can you imagine how much it would cost to feed this sucker?

Tens of thousands of students at Pakistan's 6,000 militant Muslim madrassas say they plan to go to Afghanistan to fight U.S. soldiers, attack bases in Pakistan that may host American forces, or conduct suicide bomb attacks against U.S. targets if President Bush launches military action against bin Laden and the ruling Taliban militia in Afghanistan <----- now they would make an ideal testing range.....
