On Oct. 1, "First Monday 2001," a national campaign promoting education and action to end gun violence, will unveil "Gun Industry Watch," a student-led watchdog group -- the first of its kind -- that will demand accountability from the gun industry and gun lobby.

This year's "First Monday" film "Deadly Business," by award-winning documentary filmmaker Glen Pearcy, is a powerful expose of the gun industry and the methods it uses to ensure guns remain the least regulated and most deadly consumer product sold in America. "Deadly Business" reveals how the gun industry and the NRA market mayhem to America. The film features Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), Common Cause President Scott Harshbarger and others. "Deadly Business" is the cornerstone of "First Monday" events in cities and on campuses and will launch a year of activities calling on the gun industry to take responsibility for its business practices.

I've been a member of the NRA for years and have yet to see them marketing mayhem. The NRA, remember, promotes tough sentencing for crimes committed with a gun, Eddie The Eagle gun safety programs through the nation, and CrimeStrike, a program that has proven very successful in greatly reducing gun violence.
