A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima denounce U.S sub-critical nuclear test

A leader of an organization of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima has denounced U.S. plans to conduct a sub-critical nuclear test as intolerable.

@ Mr. Sunao Tsuboi said on Tuesday that terrorists' acts of indiscriminate murder can never be permitted.

But he said it is evident that the experiences of Hiroshima and Nagasaki clearly show that nuclear weapons kill huge numbers of people at random.

On Monday, the U.S. Energy Department announced that a sub-critical nuclear test will be conducted on Wednesday at a site in the state of Nevada.

U.S. intelligence reports say the al-Qa'ida network of Osama bin Laden has been interested in developing weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and nuclear weapons.

Our correspondent says the planned test is intended as an act of deterrence by the United States.

I don't think so, either. But I don't think a piddly little test (relatively speaking, of course) tells anybody anything they don't already know about us.

No, nuclear weapons usually kill people in the vicinity of the explosion. If it was random, people in Capetown, Paris, and Peoria might have died too.

I'm sorry, I just couldn't let that line go by uncommented.

Seriously, this has nothing to do with the recent incident.

Sorry pal, but the deaths weren't random. We decided to blow your asses back in to the stone-age, and did so just as was planned.

Hospital sources said up to 250 beds have been added to the 800-bed Civil Hospital in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. The mountainous province is a rocky desert between the Arabian Sea and Afghanistan.

``We have been asked by the provincial government to be prepared for any eventuality. I can't say what eventuality they are expecting but we have been told not to make our preparations public,'' said a senior doctor who asked not to be identified.

You have two choices.
1. In the words of Emperor Hirohito, "Tolerate the intolerable".
2. Commit Sepeku immediately.

Fankly, we don't care which.

Hmmmm. Testing triggers and tritium I suppose.

Not a good sign if you live in Afghanistan.

experiences of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The third and seventh largest cities in Japan today! (so much for "long term" effects)

and if there are any releases of a biological or chemical nature released ANYWHERE, they are post toasties!!

That boomer is probably out there, and probably not by itself!! No, the terrorists may not fear for thier lives, but what use is the Jihad if there is nothing left of the middle east to fight for!! Yes, the terrorists had better think long and hard before releasing any NBC weapons, because all those that they fight for and against in the middle East will be nothing but radioactive green glass if they do.

Actually, it wasn't Napoleon, it was Voltaire, commenting on the execution of a French admiral for losing a fight with the Royal Navy.

The only possible explanation for this test is that we want to make sure the stuff still works.

I agree. The deterrence stuff, I don't buy.

Not at random. That was the plan. And boy did it stop a bunch of fanatical suicide pilots....

Of course, we'll never know how many suicide pilots it stopped. For all we know, zero. The Unforgettable Fire was the worst US atrocity of all time, a real stain on our nation's glory. It killed far more than the WTC attacks, and nearly all of them civilians.

I'll never understand the argument that "it saved US soldiers' lives." So a soldier, a sailor, is happy to see women and children die in his place? Sickening.

I have nothing but respect for the sailors, soldiers and marines who fought in the Pacific Theater and now use that argument, but they should think about it a little while. Sailors, soldiers and Marines were not the ones who made the cowardly decision to commit a terrorist act against a civilian population. It was an evil president, who feigned ignorance at Pearl Harbor, then willingly betrayed Europe to the communists, who planned the atrocity, and his successor carried it out.

It sure stopped all the kamikaze pilots in the Pacific. The Japanese had THOUSANDS of planes in reserve and were commited to fighting to the bitter end. Japanese civilian casualties could have ranged into the millions. Sorry. I'm not sorry for our decisive action in ending the Pacific war.

By the way my parent were on the ground in Dresden where more died then either Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Why doesn't that make the top of your list?

OK, then. Maybe not the worst atrocity. But instead of using euphemisms like "decisive action to end the war, answer me this:

So a soldier, a sailor, is happy to see unarmed, noncombatant women and children die in his place? Sickening.

Hey, Hoosier! Read "The Rape Of Nanking" the next time your heart starts to bleed. It is a sure cure for apologists for WWII Japanese thugs, rapists, murderers and sadists. And, by the way, try not to switch the blame by blaming America first!

I don't know. Why don't you throw the question out to guys who were in the Pacific waiting for orders, guys being transfered to the Pacific after winning in Europe, their wives, and children who would never have been born if we had been forced to invade Japan?
