GOOD!!! If they want to intrude into my private life, let's forever hold off this bill. Let's go after terrorists, not the American people!!

If George Bush can wait two weeks (and maybe more) before commencing ANY military action against the perpetrators (or those that harbor them(i.e. the Afghans (he said so))) then I can wait a week for people to think over very serious new rights for the government to spy on the people.

Who misspoke on the House floor and called Frank, 'Barney Fag'? The whole House chamber erupted with laughter, as I recall.

I was talking about that to a friend just yesterday.

Conyers and Franks are trying to be troublemakers. They have an agenda.

Someone ought to stick a pin in Barney and let the air out of him. I do not think Bush needs this to go after terrorist. If he does he will act anyway and get it later. I think i heard him mention a battle in congress about 6 months down the road. I am for passing temp measures and working on extended measures later.

Perhaps this time (maybe the only time ever), Barney Frank has made some sense. We should not so quickly barter away our liberties in kneejerk fashion. Perhaps these proposed measures do not really impose upon our civil rights but at this early juncture, I couldn't tell you. I'd like to have the opportunity to scrutinize these proposals before we ram them into law.

If it is Frank that stops it, then so be it. ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS...ABSOLUTELY! REMEMBER THIS...ANY LAW PASSED NOW...MAY NOT BE USED BY MR ASHCROFT LATER...OR BY BUSH. When another Administration moves in, then you may be subject to extreme prejudice, these new powers include the right to unlimited detention, tossing out Habeus Corpus, etc. We were attacked...and we need to bring those to Justice, in the process, WE SHOULD NOT TOSS OUT OUR CONSTITUTION.

Could not the laws be written to be temporary with a self-destruct date or vote to renew? It could be like a wartime draft?

I'm in favor of waiting. In fact, I'm in favor of a separate bill for each item rather than having a number of them rolled into an omnibus bill.

The important question on each new proposal is this: how can it be MISUSED at another time, another era, by a different group of leaders, or by an unscrupulous group of leaders? If that question isn't answered then I don't want ANYTHING to pass.

The weakness with the idea of letting a wire-tapping warrant be for an individual instead of a phone is that an unscrupulous agent could claim he had "reason to believe" his suspect was at just about any place in the world.

That means they could tap your phone tomorrow night.

It is wise to take time crafting this bill - Frank is correct - regardless of what ideological label may be the most appropriate for him

Ashcroft et al want the ability to seize assets without a trial and to hold people in perpetuity without being charged.

I also believe the definition of "Terrorism" is very, very broad.

A larger crime than the destruction of the WTC is taking place in front of our eyes.

Considering Mr. Frank's reputation I can understand his need for extreme privacy. However, his party leaders should lean on him to ease up. Surely he can give up the lifestyle and all it implies for awhile, or at least write emails and snail mail and stay off the phone. We are all going to have to make some sacrifices.

Probably worried about his own "exposures".

You got THAT right! People just don't seem to get it! The President and the AG do not want to take any citizens rights away from them. They are trying to protect our rights. These people are allowing themselves to be duped into the mis-information campaign being waged by the terrorists and the libs.
