I haven't seen you lift one finger to condemn Falwell's words. In fact, you have offered nothing but praise for them. Called them an example of moral kindness.

Brian, there are a lot of opinions running around. Even mine is pretty harsh. I think emotions are taking over in many cases, sometimes even me.

In addition to the popular opinion that Bin Laden was behind this, there are those who think that he had help from the Taliban, Arafat , Saudi Arabia, & the UAE among others. I've heard opinions saying that China is also involved. I've heard that Israel has a lot to gain by this. And I've also heard that there may be groups that think it is their duty to drag us into a large conflict to fulfill the prophecies of the Old and New testaments who may also find ways to support an attack on us.

I wouldn't hold Fallwell in the same contempt as the Taliban, not even close. I believe he has retracted it and clarified it, explaining the comment as a stream of consciousness. He doesn't advocate murder to advance Christianity. He just profoundly believes that God plays an active role in civilization, and thinks that He would punish us for our libertine ways. There are far worse thoughts on earth than that.

Look, OWK, I can't believe I am saying this, has NOT been a shrinking violet in this. He is taking fire from both sides and I know what that feels like. Jerry kind of stepped in it and has apologized for it. I for one am heartened by the unity being shown from unexpected quarters and it is what we need right now. I am sure that the "academic" debates regarding libertarian vs conservatives will continue in full force later. I love them as a harmless diversion but damn people this ain't the time, we are dealing with real, grown-up realities. Sorry for the rant.

How is it loony? 3 men saved hundreds of lives the day they gave theirs. If 3 men on each of those planes did the same, how many thousands would be alive today? Doesn't matter if they knew what the planes were being used for... if a few men with knives threaten 60 people, it's only logical that they could easily be overpowered.. When there is a threat, a man who hasn't been deballed by the feminist agenda reacts instantly and without concern for his own safety.

Well they were taken out of context. The context of the word "PERHAPS." God can permit judgments like this attack for such things. Did He in this case? That's a question nobody can answer this side of Glory. I can't, Falwell can't. We do know that troubles can bring straying sheep back to their faith.

I don't know. I think in some ways, events like these anaesthetize (sp?) people to integrating God into their life. God becomes a security blanket when there's a crisis, a nightlight when the power's out. But as for the rest of the time, God's just ..... nothing.

I watched Carson Daly (of MTV) chatting with the lead singer of the quite positive and popular P.O.D. about the events of the past few days on his show TRL. And Carson could do the Godspeak, "God bless you, Sonny" etc.... But what does that mean come two months from now when this is starting to fade in collective psyches? Probably not a lot... Just some drive-by thoughts, fwiw

I agree 100%. It appears that the victims did not know, as nobody would have suspected this scenario for the hijackings. It is senseless to blame the victims here in any case, however it does appear that one of the planes had people who knew what was happening, and took active steps to avoid further tragedy.

There used to be an unwritten code of hijacking, that a compliant crew and passengers would eventually get away unharmed. Remember the hijackers didn't threaten with knives only, they threatened with bombs.

Consider the fact that one of the people who did respond in such a manner as you described probably exacerbated the problem. When the terrorists were reportedly killing stewardesses to get the pilots to come out.... If they hadn't responded in your mode, perhaps their plane would not have been commandeered. But that doesn't fit your scenario. Sorry to muck things up with the facts.
