Should I believe my ears? Did one of the analysts on Fox News just say that estimates of fatalities were in the range of 10,000 persons? If so, this dwarfs everything. How many died at Pearl Harbor? In Viet Nam? The Korean War? At Hiroshima or Nagasaki?
We're at war. Who are we fighting against?
This will the largest loss of life in a single 'event' in the US.
I pray for the souls of those passed and for the well being of those currently injured.
Do you have any idea of how many people are in those buildings during the work day? Elevators do not work when there is a fire. That leaves the stairways.
Many people were still inside those buildings when they collapsed.
I would say 10,000 is a low ball estimate, I would guess closer to 30,000 when all is said and done!
Says something about our country if the worst monster we can produce out of our own loins is Tim McVeigh. People thought he was bad, or the Unabomber was bad, they got *nothing* on the people who really *want* to take this country down.
My wife and I just got back from the hospital to donate blood. We hope that freepers will lead the way in this effort throughout the country. It isn't much but is something that we can all do.
And one last thing. Bin Laden should be dead before the sun sets!
I just hope we find out the terrorist organization that did this and remove them from the face of the earth. Collateral damage be damned. This is WORSE than Pearl Harbor. Far worse.
Only if our namby pamby Congress says so. I shudder to think about the debate going on there...
I'm sure there were plenty of little schoolkids taking their little field trips to the New York area... I sure hope not though.
The Pentagon was being evacuated early - lower casualties.
The WTC towers didn't fall immediately, and evacuations began quickly. The first to collapse stood for at least 20 minutes, the second for over an hour. Moreover, reports indicate that the buildings were not full at 9 am - WTC workers come in later on many floors.
10K is probably in the ballpark - 50K is way too high.
We are at DEFCON 1 and every unit should be gearing up for a serious blood-letting.
Nukes sound good, but I would rather see them all gut shot so they can watch their guts ooze slowly out as they die drowning in their own blood!
Nagasaki: August 9, 1945, the plutonium bomb, Fat Man, exploded 1,650 feet above Nagasaki at 11:01 a.m after it left the B-29 Bockscar. It had a force of 21,000 tons of TNT. Everything within three square miles was destroyed.
We will have to wait and see. Actually, I believe there were battles in the Civil War where the causalty rate may be higher.
But clearly, NOTHING compares to this since, and NOTHING compares in terms of non-combatant loss.
I expect that the losses will approach and maybe exceed 20,000 in terms of deaths.
We MUST exact a swift, horrific and lasting retribution against any organization that did this AND against ANY nation that abetted it.
Once we know who those organizations and nations are, I believe thus use of tactical nuclear devices is in order and would make the statement to those responsible and to thew world to NEVER EVER consoider such action against the USA again.
... I am completely diraught over this. I know I am speaking emotionally. But I believe just the same that such a response is necessary. The pictures of those explosions, and particularly of those buildings collapsing ... and KNOWING what it meant as it happend, are etched on my consciousness until the day I die.
Pearl Harbor: 2,450 (US)
Vietnam: 58,400 dead (US)
Korea: ~ 32,000 (US)
Hiroshima/Nagasaki: ~ 50,000 each from blast; additional 200,000 each from injuries
