Why did British police patrol the streets unarmed while officers in New York considered carrying a gun essential to doing their job?
In this 1966 report, ITN’s Peter Woods explores the stark differences between British and American policing. NYPD officers react with disbelief to Britain’s largely unarmed police force, with one lieutenant describing the idea as “sort of ridiculous” and predicting chaos if New York officers were expected to work without guns.
The report also follows firearms training at the New York Police Academy and shows unarmed British police searching for Harry Roberts, wanted in connection with the murder of three London detectives the previous month.

The woke police forces of Britain will continue to experience more injuries and deaths from immigrants while tripping over themselves to arrest native Brits for hate speech, or hate thought or...something having to do with cultural survival. Talk about denial of conditions for the past 30 years or more. And getting worse. Something’s gotta give, constables, so....which side are you going to be on when the $hit really hits the fan? And that’s gonna be sooner than you expect. Buckle in, it’s gonna be a very bumpy ride if the West is going to survive. Anyone for tea?

Around 1970 I read an article with the British criticizing our race problems and violence, since I knew about the changes in their immigration laws I made the certain prediction that in time their police would change and they would stop being smug about our armed police and race problems.
If I’m not mistaken, the British police and the criminals had an informal agreement. If one group did not carry guns, neither would the other.
But now there are British police units that do carry firearms.
Gee, I wonder what happened in the UK in the last 30 years?

Disclaimer: I know that all British cops in Northern Ireland carry guns. That’s a special case. The Irish have always been a troublesome lot.
I often wonder what became of the intellectuals and professors who were all for "multi-culti" back in the 1970s, which is when I first heard the term "multiculturalism."
They seem to be making themselves scarce. Nary a word from them anymore. They used to have so much to say. Now, not a peep.
They knew about it long before 1970, JFK ran on the platform of the 1965 immigration law, including chain migration to accelerate the replacement population.
If your not qualified to carry a gun, your not qualified to carry a badge. You'll just die and maybe get someone else killed along with you.
Sending unarmed officers out there is just completely irresponsible.
Oh guns will always be protecting Mamdani and his homely wife no matter what he does with the NYPD just the same as all those anti-gun/climate change is real celebrities who fly off in their private jets with armed security around them.
Probably quite workable in the ‘60s, with a monolithic culture in the UK that was used to obeying the law. Not so workable in in 2026, when the UK is filled with Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who care nothing about the law and view the native population with utter contempt.
The most interesting part of this video to me is how much accents have changed (moderated) since then.
Because you can’t have their cops shooting the victims of a crime.
There have always been armed units in every British police force, it's not a recent development. The ordinary copper on the street isn't routinely armed, but can call on armed backup when necessary.
The origins of this go right back to the 1840s, when Robert Peel invented modern policing to a national standard, replacing the old unstructured parish constables.
From the outset Peel was determined that the police should be a civilian force, accountable to the local watch committee, and thus very different from the armed state police of the European continent, who were unapologetic instruments of government control. That they were not armed was a consequence of this. On the rare occasions when arms were needed (mostly riot situations etc), the local armed yeomanry could be called on for support.
This tradition has continued to the present day, and continues to be supported by the police themselves (although I understand the margin of support has narrowed in informal polling).
As to whether it's still justified? Check out the murder rates in the UK compared with the USA. You might be surprised. The trend is still falling, last year was the lowest since 1977.
Incidentally, I understand that police in New York weren't routinely armed until 1896.
