A mega-dinghy carrying 140 migrants has reached the UK from Normandy after what is believed to be longest-ever Channel crossing by people smugglers.
On Sunday, the French coastguard said it had detected the vessel, which was shadowed by a number of rescue boats in case it got into difficulties.
It said authorities would not intervene at sea because of the risk to life with so many migrants on board.
The launch site – a beach east of Cherbourg in the Baie de la Seine – was around 230 miles from Calais.
It reflects a change in tactics by people-smugglers, who have started loading more migrants on to fewer and larger vessels, partly because of the success of law enforcement in disrupting boat and equipment supply chains.
As well as turning to larger boats, smuggling gangs have started launching taxi boats further west to avoid increased numbers of police on the beaches and evade interception on the water by a new seaborne police unit.
French authorities estimated that up to 140 people were on board the mega-dinghy, 90 short of the record 230 who crossed on a similar boat last month.
At least 30 people were thrown off the boat into the sea because it was so overcrowded, according to French officials.
Several French lifeboats and the Abeille Liberté, a border patrol ship, were alerted to the launch in the early hours. They then escorted the mega-dinghy as it headed towards the Isle of Wight.

Since France is aiding the invasion of Britain, the SAS needs to conduct some cross channel raids and destroy these boats on the beaches and in the piers. They can’t get to England if they sink 20 feet off shore.
I bet there were not any women or children aboard. When you are doing an invasion you leave those people behind .
I the French had sunk it, the next one may carry less people.
It should have been sunk long before it got anywhere near British soil.
Merely incarcerate the passengers for 3 months then return them to your best guess to what their home country is. Incarcerate the smuggler for 5 years.
:Thrown off? By rough waves or fellow "soon to be" upstanding citizens?
Sink those rafts. They are invaders and need to be treated as such. Every gd one of them should be feeding the crabs.
BREAKING:
For the first time, a migrant dinghy has made the longer journey from Normandy and arrived in Portsmouth instead of in the Dover area from Calais.

Authorities would not intervene because of the danger of injury to the people on the boat. Never mind the danger of that many people getting on a boat and sailing it to England. The authorities were shadowing them just in case they needed help. Otherwise they were allowed to travel unmolested. It amounts to having an escort. It is obvious that France is helping migrants cross into England while pretending to help stop them.
These SATANIC scum are going to win, because Trump has not arrested any of them.
He was our last chance to save the Republic, and he turned on us instead.
"Lock her up, lock her up"..."I told them to leave her alone".
Turn the boat around reload those illegals and send them back. Problem solved.
